Venezuela More Deadly Than Iraq

Venezuela, the supposedly oil-rich South American nation, has a higher murder rate that Iraq with over 16,000 murders last year compared to Iraq's 4,644. It is interesting that Iraq gets all of the news when it comes to violence when Venezuela is actually a far more dangerous place to live.

A number of reasons are sited for the level of violence in Venezuela including a shrinking economy; a wide gap between rich and poor, despite spending on anti-poverty programs; and the availability of millions of illegal firearms. Whatever the reasons the high murder rate is a definite blight on the government of Hugo Chavez; an administration that has sought to censor reports of violence.

Why does that sound familiar?

My guess is that the main reason why there's such a big difference is that Venezuela isn't currently in the middle of a war within it's own country, thus people being killed by others are registered as murders, where in Iraq, a good chunk of those 30-60 people being blown up on a daily basis are registered through certain "combat related deaths", where typical "Murders" by civilian vs. civilian isn't as predominate, since most deaths are either by "Terrorism," "Allied Friendly Fire," etc.

Not to mention, in Iraq, they're still regularly finding mass graves and unidentified bodies in ditches, etc. which still have to have their "COD" determined..... and considering the state Iraq is currently in, a good % of crimes and murders/deaths are not being recorded/documented as well as they should.

So imo, your comparisons between the two countries are a little skewed.

Added:

Heck, the US, while their crime rate has been declining for a while, still has the highest amount of homicides then any other industrialized nation in the world:

Crime in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"There were 17,034 murders in the United States in 2006......."

Venezuela still got nothing on the US..... I think us "More evolved and enlightened" nations have our own problems to worry about first before we start finger pointing at other nations.

Go figure that the NY Times would miss this little fact about their own nation. :tongue3:

In fact, based on my above source of US homicides and the NY Times report above..... Both Iraq and Venezuela are still safer then living in the US.

Why do people continually add an "O" to my name? :-?

I mean sure, that's how you basically pronounce my name, but the "o" is visually silent.

Actually no it's not..... "Prax'Eee'Us"

Now I'm confused about my own identity, thanks :p

We previously discussed the fact that there are millions of deaths in pagan India due to female infanticide. India has a pro West government. Do you suppose these horrid acts are attributable to its pro Western views?

It's because the crawling fly confuses them. BTW the US has about 10 times the population of Venezuela. That might account for the higher number of murders in the US.

Indeed, and I am aware of their larger population, but it still doesn't remove the fact that they have more homicides overall.... but my main point was that since the original post seemed to sum up what the problems were in Venezuela compared to Iraq without actually looking at the bigger picture.... the same could be done towards the US in order to show the flaws in the argument.

Bigger population in comparison..... a war currently being waged within your own borders..... police and drug lords fighting...... corruption..... lack of laws to protect the people...... religious extremists allowed free reign.... lack of a justice system to seek out and investigate homicides...... Lack of a proper medical system to determine causes of death or to determine them in a timely fashion (thus many bodies laying around not identified or COD determined) there are thousands of possible reasons for something and just looking at numbers on a sheet or a biased report doesn't give you the reality of what's going on, let alone if a country is actually safer then another to live in.

At present, if I had to choose, I'd still probably live in Venezuela then live in Iraq.

Now that's just ludicrous....

What's Ludicrous?

That the US is documented in having more homicides then Venezuela?

That Iraq's systems of law and health still need improvement and many deaths are still to be determined? (Civilian Homicide, Combat Related Deaths from allied forces or Al'Q related forces, accidental, etc.)

Or that we should be minding our own damn business and focusing on our own problems before we start finger pointing at other nation's problems?

Eagle, seriously get over your defensive attitude will you?

The report came from a US source, I in turn used US statistics to counter the source's claims...... it was not an attempt to bash the US, in fact I purposely pointed out that the statistics in the US have been continually improving over the last few years.

Frig, you just can't please some people unless you kiss their ass so much you suck the turds from their arse.

The first, only.

The homicide rate in the USA is about 5.4 per 100,000. The rate in Venezuela is 73.0 per 100,000. You are THIRTEEN TIMES more likely to be murdered in Venezuela.

BTW, the world murder rate is 7.6 per 100,000.....the USA is MUCH better than the average......

Who could disagree that Iraq is a mess?

As for not "finger pointing at other nation's problems", I'm all for it, especially if we start with the USA........(unlikely)

One Reason= CIA, say it until you are able to understand, the reason why there is so much trouble in Venezuela, is because of the CIA agent doing the troubles overthere, not even a single time, the new york times (owned by the Rockefellers- rich bastards who created the CIA in the 40's) are naming the CIA.

The murder of one million Iraqis by Bush's invasion doesn't count for some reason. Naturally, the NY Times (''all the news that's fit to tint'') doesn't look at it that way.

EagleSmack is a guy who used to condemn anti-USA threads on this forum but who has never been shy about attacking Venezuela or Cuba. I guess he needs to learn that what goes around, comes around.
