This is the add. Make whatever you want out of it.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Planning a European vacation and don’t want to talk American politics with an inquisitive foreigner? A New Mexico T-shirt company suggests going Canadian. For $24.95, T-shirtKing.com offers the “Go Canadian” package, full of just the kind of things an American traveler can use to keep a vacation free of U.S. politics.
There’s a Canadian flag T-shirt, a Canadian flag lapel pin and a Canadian patch for luggage or a backpack. There’s also a quick reference guide — “How to Speak Canadian, Eh?” — on answering questions about Canada.

No that is PART of the article... you left out the part that says it is a joke from a company that sells funny T-shirts.

Just another myth. People from the US do not even think about it.

This is from an Urban Dictionary: Urban Dictionary: canadian flag

1) What Americans attach to their backpacks/suitcases/purses/bags while in Europe,
especially France. Used to disguise identity or in hopes that any sort of harassment
will be dissuaded. Usually in small iron-on patch form.

Look at that guy with the Canadian Flag...who does he think he's kidding?

Followed at the bottom by:
Canadian: "You Americans are hated so much in Europe that you sew Canadian
flags on your backpack, eh?"
American: "That'd be a waste of time even if we did it, because they can tell
we aren't Canadian by the fact that we are actually wearing clothes that
aren't plaid or jean jackets."

It's possible that we drink so much good beer our judgment in these matters is impaired.
