USA boycots Scotland.

Not wanting to visit Scotland is a personal decision, no one has banned it. We also never forgot what France did to help us win our Revolutionary War.
It's because they had cannons SJP let's not get all teary eyed for the Scots. Next we'll hear some claim for superior ethnic intelligence or some such crap.My ancestors used to delight in dragging the gut eating bags of wind out of their caves and lynching them, that explains the tiny population. As it was the infestation was bad enough.:smile:
Yes we are really deciding that and it is too late. We are screwed. Nobody has made a phone call, taken antibiotics, gone to McDonalds, watched TV, taken a ride on a steam engine, or played the bagpipes since this country wide boycott has begun.
The Scots are laughing at us as we languish in our boycott...
We cut our noses off to spite our face and even last night I was sharpening tools and clovis points as the boycott has plunged us completely into the stone age. :roll:
Spade, I think I have already mentioned that we lived in Scotland for two years (I worked at University of Glasgow and my wife worked at Monklands Hospital in Airdrie). So of course we heard many Scottish songs, they have a peculiar, Scottish twang to them.
While we were there, we visited Scandinavia for vacation and in Norway we heard Norwegian folk songs. I was stunned at the similarity between Norwegian folk songs and Scottish folk songs, the tunes were quite similar. I asked our tour guide and he told me that in the old days there used to be a lot of trade between Norway and Scotland, the Vikings used to come by ship and there was also plenty of intermarrying between the two.
Until I lived in Scotland I was totally unaware of the Scandinavian connection of Scotland. So you are quite right.
Spade, I think another reason also may be that in Scotland they value education highly, much more so than in many countries. They have since the old days. Even today education in Scotland is of the highest standard. In my opinion it is not at all surprising that Scotland has produced many more inventors, scientists, engineers etc. of international renown (per capita) than almost any other country.
Considering that it is a tiny country of 4 or 5 million, it has done remarkable well internationally. Here are some more of the internationally known Scottish scholars and inventors.

There are many more, too numerous to mention, such as the refrigerator, flush toilet, Dewar (or Thermos) flask, lawn mower, the electric clock etc.

VanIsle, I was able to open it with Modzilla, a very nice website. He mentioned cold beer, but he forgot to mention the Scotch. And of course, next time your doctor prescribes antibiotics to you, refuse to take them. And stop using flush toilets, use an outhouse from now on.That will really show them uppity Scots who is the master.

The devolved Scottish Parliament has been in existence since 1999, Scotland's first parliament since 1707.
Though it's not entirely independent. The British Government still has affairs over defence, border control, consitutional affairs, drug policy, the economic and monetary system and so on and so on. And Scotland - as well as England, Wales and Northern Ireland - are all less independent than each US state and each Canadian province (the UK isn't a federal state).
The Scottish Parliament's powers include education, environment, food standards, health, sport and the arts, tourism, transport, law etc. The Scottish judicial system has always been separate from the English & Welsh judicial system.
In fact, the recent releasing of the Lockerbie bomber was Scotland's first independent foreign policy since either 1707, when it unified with England, or since 1603 when Scotland's King James VI marched south to England to also become England's King James I, unifying the Crowns.
And they've already upset the Americans, in the same way they've been upsetting the English for years. So it gives you a glimpse of what a fully independent Scotland may be like on the world stage.
So with Scotland now having its own parliament and with Northern Ireland and Wales now having their own assemblies I think it's also time to give England its own parliament, otherwise this unfairness will continue.
But with Scots (the so-called Scottish Raj) dominating the current British Labour Government, it's highly unlikely to happen as long as Labour are in power.
Currently, the English are led by a Scot whereas the Scots are led by one of their own.

It was the Englishman, Thomas Newcomen, who invented the steam engine in 1712. It was known as the atmospheric engine. All Watt did was improve Newcomen's engine, allowing it to use less coal.
Without Newcomen, there would have been no industrial revolution, making Britain become the world's first industrialised nation.
You have to remember that the US is in no position to complain about Scotland releasing a convicted terrorist.
The US used to be pretty good at releasing from jail convicted IRA terrorists who were jailed for murdering innocent civilians in Britain.
And there are theories currently circulating in Britain that Al Megrahi was released to get revenge on the US for making released Guantanamo Bay prisoners live in Bermuda, a British colony.
Not long ago, Obama and the US Government made a deal with the Bermudian government to allow released terror suspects from Guantanamo Bay live in Bermuda.
When Britain protested, the US told Britain that Bermuda has devolved imigration powers separate from the rest of Britain.
So, in retaliation to the US allowing former Guantanamo Bay prisoners to live in British territory, the British Government orders the Scottish Government to release Al Megrahi and, when the Americans complain, the British Government washes its hands of the affair and says: "It's nothing to do with us. The Scottish Government has devolved judicial powers separate from the rest of Britain."
In my view, Guantanamo was a US prison. Its released prisoners should live in the US, not be forced to live in places which have nothing to do with Guantanamo.
