Canada commits 'grave violation' of rights of aboriginal women: UN report

UN committee joins chorus of critics calling for national inquiry on missing and murdered indigenous women

A United Nations committee has joined the chorus of critics who say Canada should establish a national inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women.

The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women said Canada has violated the rights of indigenous women by failing to thoroughly investigate why they are targeted for violence.

The body is adding its voice to domestic calls for an inquiry, which the Harper government has repeatedly said isn't necessary.

"This is an extremely important report for Canada," stated Dawn Harvard of the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC), in a news release.

"Canada has been told, first by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and now by the United Nations CEDAW Committee, that Canada's failures to act violate the human rights of aboriginal women."

The committee report, released March 6, said police and the justice system have failed to effectively protect aboriginal women. It says indigenous women face grave and systematic violations of their rights.

The UN?

Didn't we drop out of part of that useless club some time ago?

I guess it's time to drop out of an other useless part of that club again in 2015

Maybe the UN can send peacekeepers to Canada to investigate, on behalf of the aboriginal women.

You can't drop out of something if you don't follow in the first place. Besides we already dropped out as part of our support of Israel.

Who let it out that we still have Reservations for our 'special people'?
Probably those 'upstarts in Gaza'

So Canada is doing this to aboriginal woman and not aboriginal men?

And since when is the UN relivant to anything? Perhaps they should hold an inquiry.

we've already done an inquiry

what we need is a change in how we handle FN issues...don't know what the answer is, but it sure as hell isn't another inquiry so the money goes to some bureaucratic group who will make a lot of money and then come to some vague conclusion and then make a few recommendations about changing the social structure on reserves

Can someone tell me who is doing the murdering?
well, good point

could be like the pig farm

somebody, a group of somebodies, another dead hooker with no i.d.

regardless we don't need an inquiry...maybe give the police a larger voice, there are answers out there and someone has theories already, they just might not be able to voice them

Let the UN do an inquiry, they can put the costs on Botswana's tab.
Get the ICC Staff to set a standard 'cut' for the cases they prosecute and the loser always pays the costs for both sides. Just a change in accountants might make a big swing for life on the Rez and the towns are going to be full of laid off people with less money.
6 Judges from South America are going to vote for which side?

Can someone tell me who is doing the murdering?
The ones waiting for their membership to use black prisons as a place to pick up their 'toys'. An off-shoot (pun included for free) industry by the same ones that let Mayors from the UK to go to Iraq to plunk a Muslim with a sniper rifle.
