Canada commits 'grave violation' of rights of aboriginal women: UN report

UN committee joins chorus of critics calling for national inquiry on missing and murdered indigenous women

A United Nations committee has joined the chorus of critics who say Canada should establish a national inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women.

The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women said Canada has violated the rights of indigenous women by failing to thoroughly investigate why they are targeted for violence.

The body is adding its voice to domestic calls for an inquiry, which the Harper government has repeatedly said isn't necessary.

"This is an extremely important report for Canada," stated Dawn Harvard of the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC), in a news release.

"Canada has been told, first by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and now by the United Nations CEDAW Committee, that Canada's failures to act violate the human rights of aboriginal women."

The committee report, released March 6, said police and the justice system have failed to effectively protect aboriginal women. It says indigenous women face grave and systematic violations of their rights.

What a joke! Why are we still a member of this useless, self-righteous, dangerous organization?

Here are some facts:

The clearance rate for murdered aboriginal women is the same as that for murdered non-native women. That in itself belies any accusation of bias.

Over 90% of aboriginal murder victims are killed by persons known to them

The one very concerning fact is that, while the victimization rate among non-native women has dropped radically over the past few years, the rate among native women has dropped very slowly. But the fact is native men are murdered at a rate 2 1/2 times that of native women....................

The simple fact is that high rates of murder in aboriginal communities is a problem that needs to be handled by natives, and is part and parcel of our treating them like dependent children...............and throwing more money to them is exactly the wrong way to handle it.

The ones waiting for their membership to use black prisons as a place to pick up their 'toys'. An off-shoot (pun included for free) industry by the same ones that let Mayors from the UK to go to Iraq to plunk a Muslim with a sniper rifle.

huh?
