Jack had the right idea, dump NAFTA.. start with Fair and Sustainable Trade, duties and tariffs on subsidized good from other countries.

Yes. Got to hate those greedy union types making wages one-eightieth those of the CEOs. Problem is those who make a decent living wage are labelled as "greedy" while those who make an obscenely high salary are called "entrepreneurs" or "talented." I mean really, how much is someone who plays pro baseball worth? Or a top film or TV star? And just how many jobs do these people really create?

I wonder how much whining the British and the Germans engaged in when the US economy passed theirs about 120 years ago?

It was sold on the premise that by allowing 'free from tarrifs trade' would allow the workers making a dollar a day in Mexico, China etc., to rise up to what the American standard of living was at the time with the same wages, benefits, pensions, working conditions (safety, hours of work, OT pay) etc..

Instead we have seen manufacturing ship off to these countries. That of course puts the 'supply and demand' of workers tilted to the employers because they know you won't quit because you have no where else to go.

You can't even start up your own biz because a huge chunk of potential consumers can't afford your product or service, and those hanging onto their jobs aren't spending any extra money.

I remember the late 70's, early 80's when you could quit a job in the morning and find another on in the afternoon on the same street.

And I mean decent paying factory work, usually Unionized.

Yes that Reagan video is really something. It was almost precisely at that time that the earning levels of Canadians and Americans flattened out and the extreme concetration of wealth among the US top one percent began to accelerate.

The Corporates thought Mexico was their excessive profit nirvana at $2 an hr but then they discovered influential Chinese party members who wanted a taste of the gold so they set up shop there.

But what will they do when they run out of low wage countries to move to?

Vancl, a Chinese online clothes retailer, is relocating part of its production set-up to Bangladesh to reduce costs of production, Global Times reported on Wednesday.

"Labour costs have been greatly reduced by moving part of the production set-up to Bangladesh," the Chinese newspaper quoted Chen Chu, public relations director at Vancl, as saying.

The new move could cut 5-10 percent of the cost for each item, according to the newspaper.

Chen said the labour cost in China, the world's largest apparel supplier, surged to $400 per person per month while the labour cost in Bangladesh varies at $75-$80 per person per month.

Obama to launch auto trade case against China



President Barack Obama will launch a trade complaint against China over what his administration says is Beijing's unfair government backing of its auto industry, a White House official said on Sunday.
Obama will announce during a campaign tour of Ohio on Monday that he is initiating a case against China at the World Trade Organization over allegedly illegal subsidies for automobiles and auto parts, the official said.

The move allows Obama to take a stand on China and advance the interests of a major job-providing industry in a state that could tip the balance in a close election. His opponent, Mitt Romney, has attacked Obama for what he says is an overly cautious approach to pressuring China into observing international norms for trade, foreign exchange, and patents and trademarks.

Ohio relies heavily on the auto industry and is a politically important swing state.

"The key principle at stake is that China must play by the rules of the global trading system," the official said. "When it does not, the Obama administration will take action to ensure that American businesses and workers are competing on a level playing field."

Obama has said Beijing is abusing trade laws by imposing more than $3 billion in duties on U.S. auto exports. In addition to launching the subsidies case, the president is taking the next formal step in the World Trade Organization to protest those duties, the official said.
