If you listen to the media you get the impression that the situation in South America isn't very good. There's a lot of hyperbole connected to it sort of like what you hear when someone cuts down a tree within 3 miles of Stanley Park. Don't get me wrong - unnecessary burning is not good but Brazil has a population of 200,000,000 who have to live too, +/- 100, 000 of which live in that rain forest. Of course "The Lungs of the Planet" makes the situation sound dire indeed, but to put things in perspective lungs in in any creature process 100% of the oxygen used by the critter as opposed to a potential of 6% provided by the Brazil rain forest. I can't overstate that unnecessary burning is a serious thing, but let's keep it in perspective. Attached is a summary of the REAL situation.
