CALGARY — A Calgary geologist who used his wife’s account to trade shares in the mining company that employed him has agreed to pay $20,000 to settle allegations of illegal insider trading.

The Alberta Securities Commission reported Wednesday that Xiang (Shane) Hua Hu has also agreed to cease trading in or purchasing any securities and exchange contracts for three years, with some exceptions.

The ASC said Hu admitted he bought and sold Bayfield Ventures Corp. shares in the fall of 2010 and spring of 2011 having seen assay results from its Burns Block exploration property near Rainy River, Ont.

The drilling activities were material to Bayfield and had not been generally disclosed to the public, the ASC said.

Hu admitted that he avoided a loss of about $4,000 and made a profit of $6,200 as a result of his trades.
