Former attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould is adding her voice to calls for some kind of investigation into the leak of confidential information about the judicial appointments process to the Supreme Court amid the SNC-Lavalin scandal.
On Monday, unnamed sources reportedly told the Canadian Press and CTV that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had been concerned about a recommendation from Wilson-Raybould to appoint Manitoba judge Glenn Joyal as chief justice of the Supreme Court back in 2017.

Judicial appointments are highly confidential. Names under consideration or reasons for passing on specific candidates are virtually never disclosed.
Wilson-Raybould said the leak jeopardized the process of judicial appointments and must be investigated.
“I do feel compelled to say that I have not — as some have suggested — been the source of any of these stories, nor have I ever authorized any person to speak on my behalf," she said.
"I strongly condemn anyone who would speak about or provide information on such sensitive matters. Any commentary/reporting in this regard with respect to a SCC [Supreme Court of Canada] appointment(s) could compromise the integrity of the appointments process, our institutions and potentially sitting justices."
She continued, adding, "This has to stop and given the seriousness of this matter I feel that there should be consideration of having some sort of investigation as to the source of this information.”
Lisa Raitt, Conservative deputy leader, also called for an investigation into the leak earlier on Wednesday.
Raitt highlighted the Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada as a potential venue to conduct the probe, and said she had made a request.....more in the link

Winnipeg, MB – It is surprising to hear that, prior to her appointment as Minister of Veterans Affairs, Jody Wilson-Raybould turned down the Indigenous Services portfolio. According to Wilson-Raybould, her long-standing opposition to the Indian Act informed her decision. But this reason does not sit well with the President of the Manitoba Metis Federation, David Chartrand, who notes that she was complicit in upholding the Indian Act as Minister of Justice and as Attorney General.

“The biggest stumbling block for the Métis Nation, First Nations, or Inuit as they assert their sovereignty in this country is the Department of Justice and the Attorney General,” said President Chartrand. “Look at the Daniel’s case or our 32-year Land Claims case. These kinds of cases take decades to get to a resolution and guess who is the gatekeeper preventing progress? It’s the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General.”

Wilson-Raybould’s supporters have suggested that appointing an Indigenous person Minister of Indigenous Services is like asking Nelson Mandela to support apartheid. But as Chartrand noted, “this is wrong. After serving years 27 years in prison, Mandela worked with Deputy President De Klerk to dismantle apartheid. Had Wilson-Raybould accepted the position with Indigenous Services, she could’ve made history by dismantling the Indian Act,” says President Chartrand. “This could have been the crown-jewel of reconciliation. For her to decline the position, I think, it’s kind of deceptive. In my view, I find it hypocritical to say you want to serve Indigenous people but won’t step up to the most important position.”

“I state unequivocally,” continued Chartrand, “her belief that no Indigenous person should be Minister of Indigenous Services is wrong. There are many great Indigenous leaders in this country, many present and past Métis leaders, chiefs and Inuit leaders who would stay the course and make the bold changes to the Act and who would not put their personal preferences over the pursuit of reconciliation.”
