It started with a 600 million dollar "bailiout" and free poutine during an election, which raised serious red flags with regards to the preservation of an independent media in "Trudeau's Canada". It was almost inconceivable that this would be accepted by a free democratic society, but it was. Now Trudeau aims to force mandatory licensing and government regulation of Canadian media. They have not said who would control the regulatory body, or how this would be enforced, however one really has to ask...does it matter? What is the problem that Trudeau is trying to solve? Does he not realize that the optics of such proposals are incredibly dubious at best, and seen as an overt and direct attack on our constitutional rights?

We've seen what could be construed as media bribes disguised as "bailouts" from this Trudeau government, proposed taxing of internet content with a so called "Netflix tax", attempted censorship and blocking access of certain media outlets during an election resulting in court injunctions overruling this banana-republic attack on freedom of independent press, and now threats of government controlling and regulating media under Trudeau. Is this something we really need our government to control? Can anyone think of even a single example where state controlled media resulted in such policies benefiting society and the people within it?

Trudeau government looking to force news outlets to get government licenses

I think this is a dangerous road to go down. I can't possibly see how a policy like this has any chance at survival in a minorty government, but, I thought the same thing about Trudeau's "media bailout" scheme as well, so...who knows. As much as Mr socks has admitted his admiration for dictators, Canadians need to draw the line and keep his admiration in check.

It's a war on Ezra Levant's Rebel and True North News.

Trudeau must still be upset the LPC lost in Court after not allowing them to cover election debates.

It's a personal issue and an abuse of power.

BACKTRACK: Amid Massive Outrage, Liberal Heritage Minister Claims Government Won’t Impose Media Licenses

Steven Guilbeault Backtrack
Given the fact that they were pushing the Communist-style media licensing idea in the first place, this denial cannot be trusted.

Amid massive and growing outrage against their Communist-style authoritarian media licensing plan, the Trudeau Liberal government is desperately trying to backtrack.

Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault, who kicked off the outrage by saying the government would require media organizations to have government licenses, now claims that won’t happen:

“In Ottawa, Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault clarifies his position on broadcasting & telecom review panel’s recommendations: “Let me be clear. Our govt has no intention to impose licensing requirements on news organizations nor will we try to regulate news content.”

That trial balloon seems to have gone the way of the Hindenburg. But there's ZERO doubt the direction this government is trying to steer the independent media. It should give every Canadian that values free speech and objective media pause to consider what the Liberals motive is here. Canadians need to flat out reject any further intrusion of Trudeau into our constitutional rights and freedoms.

Rejecting any further intrusion must be a priority for Canadians, Dec absolutely no doubt about that at all.

TRUE DAT Decapoda!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have repeatedly stated that Our idiot Boy is an aspiring Soviet Dictator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And his latest effort to ERASE free speech in this country PROVES IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wretched LIE-berals are meddling to harmful effect in EVERY AREA OF OUR SOCIETY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Consider:::::

Here is an older article illustrating that LIE-berals want to fiddle with our legal system in order to save gravy for themselves - at the expense of public safety!!!!!!!

With some comments of my own in brackets):

(Many news reports have made us aware that mentally disturbed persons are NOT getting the treatment they need in order to function in a healthy way. Without that treatment, they grow ever worse until they end up scaring the public so badly that cops are called to deal with a potentially lethal threat. Too often the confrontation ends in gunfire as LIE-berals have refused to tell us what magic phrase a cop can utter that will “de-escalate” the rampaging crazy person!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(LIE-berals want us to believe that there is a magic phrase that can reach into a deranged mind and be more compelling than the voices coming from inside that mind- even as cop voices are being drowned out by the phantoms in the mind!!!!!!)
The shocking acts of violence committed by Vince Li, Allan Schoenborn and Richard Kachkar have made them poster boys for a Conservative government bill that targets mentally ill offenders found not criminally responsible.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and government officials have touted the reforms as a necessary measure to protect public safety, but experts in the field argue it could do the opposite.

(Would these be the same experts who have trouble keeping dangerous loons under lock and key? Vince Li is the guy who BEHEADED a passenger on a bus! Shoenborn murdered his three kids in a psychotic episode- and has spoken of his wife as “unfinished business” and for some reason wife is not as comfortable with Shoenborn running loose as Lie-berals are! And Kachkar is ALREADY FREE- lets hope he stays on his meds or he may steal another snow plow and run over and kill another cop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(Kachkar was in and out of mental health facilities seeking help and these “experts” saw nothing dangerous in him and let him go as he pleased! Examination of the available records suggests most mentally ill people who come to the attention of cops have a HISTORY of seeking out but not getting mental health aid! As I said- they deteriorate until they get confronted by cops and now LIE-berals want to make it even easier for egg head shrinks to release them!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

The bill received royal assent a week ago and is set to become law in July, to the collective dismay of many clinicians, researchers, lawyers and judges who say the government has ignored respected research and expert opinion.

“If you want to enhance public safety, all the data is saying turn right and we’re going left,” says Justice Richard Schneider, chair of the Ontario Review Board, a provincial body that oversees individuals found not criminally responsible or unfit to stand trial.

First tabled early last year, the Not Criminally Responsible (NCR) Reform Act sparked a debate that quickly degenerated into a false choice between public safety and the rights of mentally ill accused, says Schneider.

(LIE-berals and their head shrinker allies IGNORE the pubic perception that if you attack and behead a total stranger on a bus- at the urging of phantom voices in your head- you have acted in a fashion that SEVERELY LIMITS your rights! With the added bonus that too many mentally ill persons have a history of going off their meds because of unpleasant side effects and thus they fall back into illness again.)

In the back-and-forth, a key fact was often overlooked: the lives ended by Li, Schoenborn and Kachkar would not have been saved by the amendments.

(Quite true- but earlier and more aggressive and comprehensive treatment- INCLUDING FORCED CONSUMPTION of meds would have saved lives! Kachkar WAS LEGALLY ALLOWED to walk away from treatment the day he killed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(There was a guy shot by cops in Durham Region a couple of years back- with the guy trying to crush the skulls of strangers with a table leg- and his family told the inquest that he suffered from schizophrenia AND epilepsy and was probably in the midst of a grand mal seizure when cops shot him to keep him from clubbing them!)

(As mentioned- LIE-berals blame cops for not de-escalating the situation but LIE-berals REFUSE to explain HOW to reach such a confused mind!! Even worse- LIE-berals IGNORE the truth that forced treatment would save lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

The bill seeks to change how individuals are dealt with after they are found NCR. It does not address the systemic failures that led to these terrible acts in the first place.

(And simply turning crazy people loose WILL somehow help? This LIE-beral argument is not about mental health - it is all about sneering at Harper- and buying votes from stigmatized loons and their families!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Li, Schoenborn and Kachkar all sought treatment unsuccessfully in provincial mental health systems before they killed people, a troubling pattern the Senate committee on legal and constitutional affairs branded a failure when it passed the bill.

(The evidence is clear - allowing VOLUNTARY participation in mental health programs DOES NOT WORK!! And yes- lets blame Harper for PROVINCIAL LIE-beral health care failings! Typical civil service union Hog logic!)

“Extreme acts of violence by mentally ill persons often follow repeated interaction with the health system,” the committee wrote in a report in late March. “The warning signs are there but interventions by the health system prove ineffective.
“It is a failure of the mental health system that must be addressed in order to protect public safety and address the needs of mentally ill patients . . . more work is needed to determine the cause of these significant failures,” the report said.

(DUH!! The cause of these failings is CLEAR - people are not getting help as needed and are often unwilling- don’t like the side effects, or unable-meds are too costly- to take their meds as needed to stay stable!)

These concerns are shared by nearly everyone who has a role in the system — victims, researchers, politicians, psychiatric and legal experts — which raises an important question: If the real problem is a failure of the health-care system and not the justice system, then why aren’t we working to fix that instead?

Before he decapitated 22-year-old Tim McLean on a Greyhound bus in 2008, Li had been receiving treatment in an Ontario hospital for his mental illness, but discharged himself against medical advice. Provincial laws that govern when a person can be involuntarily committed to hospital are weak, particularly in Ontario. Clinicians must believe a person poses a significant risk to themselves or others.

(IN other words Harper was right- that mentally ill persons NEED to be kept -often against their will and will often benefit from being compelled to take their meds-regardless of their personal preferences!)

Kachkar sought help at a Toronto walk-in clinic the day before he went on a rampage with a stolen snowplow and killed Sgt. Ryan Russell, a 35-year-old husband and father. A doctor advised him to visit an emergency room or the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, but he didn’t. Less than 24 hours later, a man was dead.
Though it is understandably alarming for the people whose family members were killed by these men to consider their eventual freedom, all available evidence indicates the review board system is working well, with recidivism rates for NCR patients significantly lower than those for offenders released from the prison system.

(You are telling us that the meds WORK - if the patient takes them regularly!!!!!!)

Serious problems in the mental health system were highlighted in a recent national study: 65 per cent of people declared NCR on a serious violent offence had been hospitalized prior to the offence, according to data from the National Trajectory Project, an in-progress study on NCR individuals.

(And you are telling us that provincial LIE-berals are to blame because they will; not force treatment on crazy people who cannot judge what is best for them!!!!!!!!)

Or just do what he does best...muzzle his obnoxious ministers from this point forward and deny publicly that these changes are being considered. Then once things calm down a bit...bury it in an omnibus bill, tie a bunch of strings to it and pass it in secret. Who gives a f**k about democratic process anyhow, right sport?

Nothing says freedom like deceptively jamming a bunch of Orwellian, autocratic policy down peoples throats to seize control of the media message.

Broadcasting report proposes to wreck the internet with insane hubris and mad regulatory overreach

How could any group of seven apparently sane and certainly highly educated specialists believe that Canada will legislate into being a system of state control of communications as pervasive, as illiberal and as unfree as what they have proposed in the final report of the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Legislative Review (BTLR), which they submitted to the federal government last week? By grossly expanding what is called “broadcasting,” the report’s authors aim at nothing less than a statist counter-revolution against the internet.

The report is a classic case of perceptual blinkers. It sees the internet as “broadcasting,” so everything about the internet is relentlessly squeezed into the conceptual model that a half century of micro-managing Canadian regulation has created for “broadcasting.” When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Or as Einstein said, theory determines what is observed.

Broadcasting may seem to be a technology or a kind of business. It is not; in Canada, at least, it is a legal regime of pervasive regulation and licensing. The BTLR report proposes to wreck what makes the internet free, popular and innovative and to make it resemble the Canadian broadcasting system: tidy, licensed and harnessed to government objectives. The report has already been trashed by my former CRTC colleague Peter Menzies and by the University of Ottawa’s Prof. Michael Geist as mad regulatory overreach, and with good reason. The question is how did the review panel arrive at such insane regulatory hubris?

The BTLR wants to assimilate the internet to broadcasting. This is not merely a technical fallacy; it is the imposition of a single, obsolete, highly regulated scheme, predicated on the limitations of a particular 20th-century technology, onto a computer-driven, dynamic, innovative and market-propelled global system of communications. It is, I suspect, an attempt to deal with the market power of large platforms like Facebook and Netflix with the wrong tools. But more than anything, it is an unprecedented power grab for the federal government and the CRTC.

When thinking about communications, we have two models to choose from: broadcasting and printing. After several political revolutions, the printing system eventually became free of government licensing, while broadcasting remains heavily regulated.

Printing needs no prior permission of the government whereas broadcasting is only legal through government licence. Fearsome penalties apply for broadcasting without a licence. Broadcasting is a punitive and restrictive legal regime for securing compliance with a set of national political goals.

In Canada, the broadcasting regulatory system grew into a nationalist response to American cultural dominance. The system embraces its regulated entities (radio, TV and cable) and seeks to channel private and public funds to Canadian program production. It assumes Canadian programming is expensive to produce so American programming has to be restricted and the profits from it channelled into domestic TV production. The broadcasting system assumes the few talk to the many in a largely closed system that can be harnessed for purposes of public policy. The authors of the report are convinced the problem the Broadcasting Act sets out to solve is as relevant and pressing as it ever was. So just as cable television was assimilated into the broadcasting regulatory system back around 1980, so shall the internet be “harnessed” to the Canadian broadcasting system now. In fact, the same lawyer who won the cable system argument back in 1980 in the Capital Cities cases, Peter Grant, now at law firm McCarthy Tétrault, was the principal legal mind behind the BTLR report 40 years later.

Whether the internet’s greatest feature is innovation without permission or permitting people to speak without permission is an open question. The BTLR recommendations envisage a wholesale transformation of a system of free expression into a government-directed system of licensees. It is boldly statist in its goals. By contrast, a 1997 legal opinion for the Department of Industry simply assumed that what mattered on the internet was the activity and concluded that “no glaring problems have been found that mandate a massive government intervention.” It therefore saw no reason to subject the Canadian portions of the internet to broadcasting regulation.

What has changed? Everything — except the thinking of the broadcasting legal fraternity, which has never deviated from its belief that the internet constitutes “broadcasting” whenever full-motion video is involved. With the BTLR report, the range of what will be considered broadcasting expands even further to include text online.

The report is not the final triumph but the last hurrah of the broadcasting model. It does not prefigure a complete triumph of Canadian regulatory oversight of what people say and get through the internet. Nor is it the dawn of a monstrous growth in the regulatory power of a renamed CRTC, as my colleagues rightly fear. Once newspapers, communications companies and ordinary citizens wake up to this massive overreach, it will become a dead letter, if it is not already.

In the meantime, we can only marvel that they thought they could get away with it.

Wow, if that is a cut and splice someone did a great job. If not, it is yet more proof this poof is a threat to all intelligent Canadians who would see the end of PC virtue-signalling madness under his regime and a return to common sense and total freedom of the press. Having just lost a powerful voice for unrestricted journalism and unbounded truth when Christie Blatchford passed today, Canada more than ever needs to see the rise of other honest journalists though her shoes will be hard to fill.

You should read this - if you dare::::::::

For anybody looking for the definitive answer to what manner of utterly destructive goof our former prime minister Pierre Trudeau was- and what sort or poisoned values he passed on to his wretched son Justin, one has only to look at the Ottawa Citizen review of a biography of his life written by Max and Monique Nemni. I have drawn out some highlights of that review and then added some comments of my own to the Citizen review and my words appear in brackets. The review appeared in the May 31, 2006 edition and the Nemnis are quoted as follows:

“We discovered a Trudeau who was remarkably different from what we and everyone else had assumed," authors Max and Monique Nemni write in their book, Young Trudeau: Son of Quebec, Father of Canada, 1919-1944.
Even those involved in the book's production say they were shocked at what it reveals about the man who is widely regarded as a modern father of Confederation.

"I was astounded and appalled by this lengthy and convincing account of Trudeau's intellectual journey to the age of 25, long past the age when these activities can be dismissed as youthful follies," says the book's publisher, Douglas Gibson, a long-time admirer of Canada's 15th prime minister.
(Gibson is referring to the Trudeau dedication to anti Semitism, radical Communist ideology and disdain for the democratic process and his separatist ideals).
However, the Nemnis' book draws on Mr. Trudeau's own writings to demonstrate that in the late 1930s, as a student at the Jesuit-run College Jean-de-Brebeuf, Mr. Trudeau ardently embraced the chauvinist francophone nationalism.

In 1936, at the age of 17, Mr. Trudeau wrote a school essay that portrayed him as someday leading a separatist army to create an independent and Catholic Quebec. In one school essay, he sketches a fantasy of being a revolutionary blowing up "the enemies' munitions factories."

"I will return to Montreal sometime around the year 1976: the time is ripe to declare Quebec's independence. The Maritime provinces join with us, and so does Manitoba. I take command of the troops and lead the army to victory. I now live in a country that is Catholic and Canadien."

Mr. Trudeau also demonstrated a distinct lack of multicultural credentials in his youth. He wrote a one-act comedy of manners in 1938 that "was intended to bring out the difference between dishonest and profiteering Jews and honest but too naive French Canadians." The play was selected by the college to mark its 10th anniversary and was "a great success."

Nor, it seems, was young Mr. Trudeau enamoured with liberalism. "Liberalism leads to excesses: to unemployment, anarchy," he wrote in jotting down the main ideas of the "first serious book" he'd read, Pour nous grandir by Victor Barbeau.

One book Mr. Trudeau particularly admired was by Alex Carrel, who won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1912, and, in 1941, returned to Nazi-occupied Europe to become a star in the collaborationist Vichy regime led by Henri Petain. In L'homme, cet inconnu, published in 1935, Mr. Carrel denounced democracy as foolish and harmful.

"The equality of rights is an illusion. The feeble-minded and the man of genius must not be equal before the law. ... The sexes are not equal."

(I guess that Trudope remark about the `sexes` largely explains why Margaret Trudope ran off to New York/Studio 54 with the Stones and got FAMOUSLY photographed slouching without her underwear! Marg Trudope could give Brittany Spears lessons on public indignity! And no wonder she was a little unstable with a hubby like Pierre!)

Young Mr. Trudeau regarded it-the Carrel book- as the "perfect" book that needed "to be assimilated entirely."

As a first-year law student at the Universite de Montreal in the fall of 1940, Mr. Trudeau wrote notes on the defects of democracy: "Ignorance, credulity, intolerance, hatred for superiority, the cult of incompetence, and excess of equality, versatility, the passions of the crowd, the envy of individuals."
Indeed, like most Quebecers, Mr. Trudeau was against wartime conscription. But his objection wasn't just passive. Young Trudeau advocated what can only be, considering the circumstances, as treason.

In 1942, Mr. Trudeau gave a speech supporting the anti-conscription candidate Jean Drapeau, the future mayor of Montreal. The speech, say the Nemnis, was "anti-British (and) anti-colonial." He denounced the "military clique" ruling Canada and the "disgusting dishonesty" of the (LIE-beral!) Mackenzie King government in forcing conscription on French Canadians. "And if we are not in a democracy, let the revolution begin without delay."

(In other writings not connected to the Ottawa Citizen review, Turdeau was asked why he did not join the fight against Hitler and he responded “I was taught to stay away from Imperialist wars”!)

Rhetoric perhaps, but Mr. Trudeau went on to denounce the Canadian government for even having declared war against Germany in 1939, "at a time when America was not threatened with an invasion, at a time when Hitler had not yet won his staggering victories."

The Nemnis attribute Mr. Trudeau's youthful attitude to the influence of his upbringing and the social environment in which he was raised.

The Nemnis themselves have admitted in interviews that as friends of Mr. Trudeau, they were uncertain about revealing everything they discovered. The Nemnis, academics in the fields of political science and linguistics, describe themselves as left-leaning liberals and staunch federalists. Between 1995 and 2000, they edited the pro-federalist magazine Cite libre (and some call it Communist inspired as its idea of strong federalism included radical socialism as economic policy) at the urging of Mr. Trudeau, who was one of the magazine's founders in the 1960s.

"We were his friends and we wondered whether we should reveal this," said Ms. Nemni, who, along with her husband, got Mr. Trudeau's approval for the biography in 1995.

And they wonder why Mr. Trudeau saved the material, considering the damage it could do to his reputation. "We believe that he had failed to face up to the follies of his youth, but was unwilling to cheat with history."

(I say: The Nemnis and Douglas Gibson are of course desperately seeking some excuse for their suddenly disgraced and much admired leader and long time friend and they wish to pin his disgraceful attitudes onto youthful foolishness-this is deceit on a grand scale! Trudeau was a life long hard core communist who carefully followed the Stalinist party line.

In early 1939 when Stalin and Hitler announced their non aggression pact, it meant that Hitler became a Stalin ally and thus somebody to be supported by Trudeau. The pact cleared the way for Hitler to attack Poland in Sept/39-free from the threat of Soviet interference) and this turned Britain into a Trudeau enemy-daring to elect anti communist Churchill and then declaring war on Germany and when Canada joined the fight WE also became imperialist enemies of Trudeau!

The Nemi`s speak of a strong anti semitic streak in staunchly Catholic Quebec of the early 20th century and this would have been the a Trudeau value as well so they say. However the motivation for Trudeau to be riding about Montreal wearing a German army helmet derives from his Stalinist leanings. Jewish groups with the aid of Swiss Red Cross were doing all they could to expose the ever more savage atrocities committed against Jews, Slavs and political opponents in the Nazi occupied territories and they were making the Nazis look bad-and by extension they were making Stalin look bad so Trudeau took action.

There are a number of accounts of Trudeau riding through Jewish neighbourhoods on his Harley Davidson. Some stories suggest he only had the helmet while others say he wore a full Nazi uniform. One has to assume that since he was so busy writing speeches denouncing Britain; he often had scheduling troubles and simply donned the helmet and left the rest of the uniform at home-at other times with less demands on his time he donned the full uniform. He has also been reported giving the finger to Jews on the street-an early form of Salmon Arm Salute!

The Trudeau act with the helmet and uniform was not a one time thing nor was it a simple prank-his act was designed to send a message-one as plain and stark as planting a burning cross in front the residence of a 1950 Mississippi Black family. The message was this-we know who you are and where you live. You need to learn your place and keep your head down and your mouth shut-and MAYBE trouble will pass you by. I believe this is why Trudeau repeatedly appeared in Montreal suburbs in his regalia-as an attempt to intimidate anti Hitler critics into silence.

Of course when Hitler tore up the pact and invaded the Soviet Union, Our Pet returned to his single minded support of radical socialism).

The U.K. and Canada are Hypocrites to Hand Out “Press Freedom” Awards

In November, the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs and the British First Secretary of State announced the winner of the first Canada-United Kingdom Media Freedom Award.

The prize, which is designed to promote the free press globally and encourage other nations to improve security for reporters, was awarded to the Belarusian Association of Journalists. The association from Minsk has previously won a number of awards for its work despite media suppression from the Belarusian government.

And while I’m sure the journalists appreciate the award, the announcement feels more like lip service than a meaningful effort to promote a free press.

Andrei Bastunets, the president of the winning association, said that journalists in Belarus “have to work under gunfire” and are the “victims of police violence and are sentenced to long-term arrests for their work.”

Honouring the commendable work of journalists fighting state oppression in a literal dictatorship is one way to make life at home feel peachy, but it’s a cheap and meaningless platitude when the actions of the governments granting the award don’t line up with their words.

In April last year, the United Kingdom slipped down to number 35 in the Reporters Without Borders world press freedom rankings, down from 33 the year before. The U.K. is ranked among the worst in Western Europe. In previous years’ rankings, the U.K. suffered as former prime minister Theresa May and former home secretary Amber Rudd talked up plans to discourage the use of end-to-end encrypted messaging and requested that Big Tech firms decrypt private messages on demand.

In the most recent ranking, the U.K. was hit hard by the serious threats posed to the safety of journalists in Northern Ireland while covering paramilitary activity and crime. The failure to establish a national committee for the safety of journalists despite the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport announcing it would do so in 2019 didn’t help either.

In June 2020, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms also issued a warning to Canada’s prime minister after he excluded alternative media from his press conferences. The legal advocacy organization defended the rights of an alternative media journalist who was physically removed from a Rideau Cottage press conference on May 27, 2020.

It followed a national scandal that erupted earlier that year when the Heritage minister proposed a government licence for news media outlets to determine who may officially be considered a media outlet. The Liberals soon walked back the shocking proposal, but talk of regulating internet content providers has not yet died down.

Left-wing activists have long said that the free press isn’t really free because it is owned and run by old, white, male billionaires. And perhaps this is something that the left and right can agree on. It’s the reason why the online media revolution happened, with alternative journalists creating their own shows on YouTube, new podcasts appearing all the time and individuals sharing information directly on Twitter and social media to bypass the media outlets entirely.

This is the new media, and on top of the challenges that traditional journalists face, Big Tech poses a new and terrifying threat to everybody else.

In May, Google began censoring Western users who criticized the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). American tech entrepreneur Palmer Luckey described how every comment he ever made about an internet propaganda division of the CCP, known as Wumao, had been deleted. Google also deleted all new comments that other users made.

In January, alternative social media app Parler was removed from the Google and Apple app stores after Big Tech claimed that the January 6 Capitol Hill rioters used the app to organize online. The FBI confirmed that the violence that occurred was organized on other social networks, including Twitter, but the app store ban remained in place. Amazon then delivered a death blow by removing the platform’s access to its servers, taking the website down entirely.

The West has by no means a truly free press, and as the media landscape continues to change, the freedom of the press will only get worse so long as the new culture of internet censorship sticks around. Which it looks like it will.

I’ve been shot at by rubber bullets and blinded by tear gas while reporting on the Gilets Jaunes riots in Paris, and it sure made me miss life back at home. But the grass is always greener, and before Canada or the United Kingdom starts lecturing the world about press freedom, perhaps we should get our own ducks in a row first.
