(Some reader swill recall my previous posts- with information taken from Cdn Geographic magazine about how the 9/11 terror attack grounded 25 percent of the worlds airline fleet- and a year later the air across the planet was measurably cleaner! This article expands on that old report!)
On the morning of September 11, 2001, officials at the U.S. national air control centre couldn’t make out what was happening, at first.
As controllers watched the second plane crash into the World Trade Center complex just after 9 a.m., however, it became clear that the first one hadn’t been a spectacular accident, but something much more sinister. Planes were becoming fuel-filled missiles. How many? Nobody knew.
Officials at the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration did the only thing they could think of to try to control the situation: ordering every aircraft in U.S. airspace, about 4,000 of them, to land somewhere, anywhere, immediately.
Canadian officials followed. Airports in Atlantic Canada quickly filled with thousands of bewildered people who had been flying west across the Atlantic from Europe, but found themselves stranded in Goose Bay, Labrador or Stephenville, Nfld.
Within a few hours, the skies across the continent were empty except for military aircraft. Here’s what it looked like: Civilian air traffic wouldn’t resume for three days.
Thousands of jet aircraft leave contrails over North America every day, especially over the U.S. eastern seaboard and the Midwest. Contrails are created when water vapour in hot air blasted out of jet engines freezes in the intense cold of high altitudes.
Do all those jet trails change weather patterns? It’s hard to tell, normally. But with the once-busy skies silent and empty, the scene was set for a giant experiment.
“I remember walking to and from my office (in the days after the attacks) and thinking how incredibly clear the skies were,” Andrew Carleton, a geographer at Pennsylvania State University, later wrote.
About a year after the attacks, Carleton, David Travis, a geographer at the University of Wisconsin, and another colleague argued in a paper that thin clouds created by contrails reduce the range of temperatures. By contributing to cloud cover during the day, they reflect solar energy that would otherwise have reached the earth’s surface. At night, they trap warmth that would otherwise have escaped.
The effect during the three days that flights were grounded was strongest in populated regions where air traffic was normally densest. The increase in range came to about two degrees Celsius.
(IN other words- it isnt just the carbon monoxide and other gases that engines produce that we must worry about! The water vapour being generated is also a SERIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL THREAT! And the latest jet engines have the ironic quality of being both more fuel efficient and more environmentally unsound since the new engines spit out larger lumps of carbon that water droplets coalesce around more easily than the smaller lumps from older engines! The new more fuel efficient engines actually accelerate the production of contrails! And the new Airbus 380`s actually fly few thousand ft higher where the air is even colder and condensation is further facilitated!)
Other studies have tended to back up the research. In 2011, British scientists wrote that an air raid in May 1944 involving over 1,400 aircraft measurably lowered daytime temperatures in England. In that case, the situation was the reverse of 9/11 – large-scale air travel was unknown, and dense concentrations of large planes were rare.
In 2004, NASA scientist Patrick Minnis wrote that “increased cirrus coverage, attributable to air traffic, could account for nearly all of the warming observed over the United States for nearly 20 years starting in 1975.”
Minnis also argued that a steady increase in cloud cover over the United States, about one per cent a decade, was due to increasing air travel. He also found that increases in cloud cover were more pronounced in populated areas, and stronger in winter, when contrails are bigger.
The warming effect happened because the high-altitude clouds that contrails created tended to trap warm air, Minnis wrote. On balance, though contrails can both warm and cool, there is more of a warming effect.
A Penn State study compared regions of the United States where contrails tended to form more strongly with areas where they didn’t. The more contrail-heavy the area, the less the variation between daytime highs and nighttime lows tended to be.
In a 2005 paper, physicist Robert Noland of Imperial College London suggested that restricting airliners to 31,000 feet, and 24,000 feet in winter, could reduce the formation of contrails. Though lower-flying planes would be less fuel-efficient, Noland argued that the increased fuel consumption would be more than made up for by less contrail-linked clouds as a cause of global warming.
(So we now have solid proof that airplane contrails are contributing to global warming and are a major source of air pollution - just as the old articles from Cdn Geographic magazine claimed. Therefore the LIE-beral carbon crap and trade tax will do NOTHING to clean the air- nor save us from global warming! As I and many others have repeatedly pointed out- LIE-beral crap and trade just cleans wallets and leaves the dirt in the air!)

And we have yet to discuss the environmental degradation brought on by heavy use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers at those golf courses- which all to often run into the nearest body of water after a rain storm- with MORE ugly environmental results!)

The City of Toronto is on its THIRD contract for electric TOY Busses for TTC.
The two previous low emission bus contracts were desperate failures- with the special buses costing 50 - 100 percent MORE than regular buses and utterly FAILING to deliver either mechanical reliability OR the longed for fuel efficiency either!

Lakehead University Economics Professor Livio Di Matteo, author of the Fraser Institute report A Federal Fiscal History, said he looked at Canada’s history of deficits and debt for the country’s 150th birthday.
It turns out the country has been in the red for about 75% of that time.
“On average, the country spends more than it takes in,” Di Matteo said.
(In earlier times-this deficit spending met with Keynsian economic logic-new railways, improved harbours and new canals and such encouraged trade and brought in MORE govt revenue in the long run to pay for more expansion. But now govt is borrowing money simply to provide civil service Hogs with more gravy-with NO long term improvement in govt fiscal situation-in fact its harming us with long term debt and discouraging businesses to set up here due to soaring taxes so we don’t get any new jobs and the old jobs have frozen wages, reduced hours and etc- meaning No current modern way to pay off our ever increasing debts! And as interest payments and taxes eat into Hog incomes, there is ever greater pressure on govt to provide them with MORE GRAVY! )
But the only other time that the federal government ran up a significant stretch of annual deficits — with the exception of wars and economic calamities — was during the Liberal Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau governments of the 1960s and 1970s, he said.
Like today, interest rates were relatively low but the level of debt quickly became a crisis when rates later spiked, forcing deep public spending cuts in the 1990s, Di Matteo said.
The Justin Trudeau government is clocking a $29.4-billion deficit in 2016-17.
“The finance department has already projected that there could be deficits continuously all the way to 2051,” he said. “Right now, even though the debt-to-GDP ratio looks quite reasonable and the deficit as a share of GDP looks small, a lot of it is under assumptions of continued relatively low interest rates.”
(LIE-beral govt lives in daily TERROR of high interest rates and deflation-both of which will prove that govt has created a fiscal house of cards that will collapse at the first major economic strain!)
Just a few percentage points on the approximately $750 billion in federal debt would quickly drive up how much the country owes, he said.
The Pearson-Trudeau deficits ran for 27 years consecutively — the most in the country’s history — with Trudeau leaving office in 1984 without ever having balanced the books, Di Matteo added.
(With LIE-beral prime minister Chretien “solving” the debt crisis by dumping his troubles on the provinces! Ontari-owe being worst case with federal health funding transfers dropping from 53 percent of the total to 17 percent and leaving a BIG debt hole for Ontari-owe to fill!)
“They were then followed by the longest ever string of surpluses and that was only 11 years — 1997-2007,” he said.
(And those surpluses were driven by oil tax revenue charged on record priced $140.00 a barrel oil-and that ain’t available to us any more with oil now at such low prices. And of course there is the environmental issue as well-it would be nice to save our climate by reducing carbon emissions and that will also ensure lower oil prices if we use less of it! LIE-berals are caught between their fabulously costly promises to Hogs and the need to both reduce debt and save the environment! )
(To complicate matters even more-its is Hogs and members of the Sunshine List who are most likely to fly in filthy airplanes with their monstrous carbon output- traveling by plane is the DIRTIEST WAY to go! It is environmentally more sound to drive an SUV to Florida than to fly there! Hogs are also most likely to have summer homes and an array of gas guzzling toys-weaning such greedy Hogs away from their oil rich life style will NOT BE EASY-especially when LIE-berals absolutely DEPEND on the support of such Hogs to remain in power!)
(The environment cannot be saved by picking on poor people who already have the smallest carbon footprint. We need hot water to wash in and we must heat our homes. Our work place needs lights and heat as well. People living in smaller cities and towns with no public transit MUST continue to drive to work etc. There is a point below which we simply CANNOT shrink our carbon footprint further. But there IS discretionary use of oil that CAN be reduced-riding lawn mowers, recreational flights on planes, huge motorboats that travel at huge gas guzzling speeds and take many hundreds of liters for a single fill up.)
(To save our environment and reduce our debts we MUST make hard choices about what we really can afford and must have-and the first thing that ought to go is more gravy for Hogs so they will be compelled to live like the rest of us-they will drive smaller more fuel efficient cars and will drive them less often, will buy smaller easier to heat houses and they must be made to re-consider how often they use those gas guzzling toys!)
In the country’s early years, the government ran up debt to ensure the transcontinental CPR railway connected a new nation, he said.
Government spending also ramped for the two world wars and during depressions and recessions, he added.
“Those were situations where I suppose you could understand it,” Di Matteo said.
(Keynsian economics is quite logical about different spending during good times and bad-too bad our LIE-berals only like HALF of that policy- LIE-berals have heeded the parts about govt spending but have IGNORED anything to do with govt savings and controlling debt and now the bills are coming due-and it will be LIE-berals and Hogs that we should look to for PAYMENT! The Canadian economy is experiencing low growth but is not in recession, yet Trudeau has no foreseeable plan to balance the books, he said.
“My question is how you can plan for a scenario where you basically want to run deficits steadily for the next 30 or 40 years,” Di Matteo said. “I really found that a bit disturbing.”

They told us that in the 9 months AFTER that attack- during which time fully 25 percent of the worlds airliners were GROUNDED- with people not able to fly as normal -THERE WAS A MEASURABLE IMPROVEMENT IN AIR QUALITY AROUND THE WORLD!!!
So here is the fun question: "what effect would we have on the environment if we TOOK AWAY all those travel for free junkets from our politicians"?
Think of it? All those THOUSANDS of Hogs SUDDENLY prohibited FROM flying about for fun or amusement on our dime? Think of the huge entourage that any political leader deems essential to a successful trip abroad! Just how many air planes would be grounded and rendered redundant and how much CLEANER would be our air be if we ORDERED that any politician who wanted to talk to another one HAD TO SKYPE!

Make them send an email instead- IF they really have anything intelligent to say! And make them BUY THEIR OWN DAMNED DINNER! With what we pay them - they CAN afford it!

I've never said that oil faced an imminent demise. Every major technical change faces an obstacle called technological inertia, which means that societies tend to stay with existing technology until the new tech is proven superior or there is enough of the new tech that using the old tech becomes inconvenient. The switch to electric light took decades, as did the change to the internal combustion engine and a host of other inventions we now take for granted. The difference in the current era is that change is happening at an incredibly fast pace. Some changes are going to happen a lot faster than most people realize.
As for oil; it will be around for quite some time. In fact its use will almost certainly increase as countries like India and China continue to modernize. However, that does not mean that it will be dominant forever, not when superior tech is on the horizon.
Well that seems like we have the same goal . Take climate change and carbon taxes out of the equation and we might get somewhere .

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The Netherlands has approved a limited ban on “face-covering clothing” in public places, including Islamic veils and robes such as the burka and niqab but not the hijab, which covers only the hair. Firebrand far-right politician Geert Wilders had pushed for the ban for over a decade.
Parliament’s upper chamber made the final approval in a vote Tuesday.
(I have suggested before that one way of discouraging radical Muslims from coming to Canada would be to forbid the Burqa! Radical Muslims would not wish to see their females exposed on the street like common western sluts and would go to other countries with more “tolerant” attitudes!)
The Dutch law is described by the government as “religion-neutral,” and does not go as far as more extensive bans in neighbouring countries like France and Belgium. It applies on public transport and in education institutions, health institutions such as hospitals, and government buildings.
