May gets $1,500 fine for contempt of court

VANCOUVER - Green party Leader Elizabeth May has pleaded guilty to a criminal contempt of court charge for violating an injunction at a Kinder Morgan work site in Burnaby, B.C.
May was arrested in March at a Trans Mountain pipeline terminal in Burnaby when she joined activists including New Democrat MP Kennedy Stewart, who pleaded guilty to the same charge earlier this month. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Affleck had imposed an injunction requiring protesters to stay at least five metres away from two work sites in Burnaby.
Affleck ordered that May pay a $1,500 fine, saying she is in a position of influence as an MP and as a lawyer she had a responsibility to obey the injunction.
After her arrest, May said permits issued for the twinning of the existing Trans Mountain pipeline did not respect the rights of Indigenous people.
Dozens of people have been arrested for protesting against the project, which has been approved by the federal government.
May's lawyer, Alex Ejsmont, told the judge his client apologizes for the harms her actions caused to the court as he proposed a fine of $500, adding May entered an early guilty plea that indicates her remorse.
"She takes the position that non-violent civil disobedience has a place in a functioning democracy," he added.

Mayor Gregor Robertson highlights federal refusal to offset city costs after 2015 English Bay oil spill

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau likes to brag about how much his Liberal government is investing in addressing future oil spills along B.C.'s coastline.
However, the City of Vancouver has still not been able to recover all of its response costs connected to a 2015 oil spill in English Bay.
According to Mayor Gregor Robertson, the city filed claims on February 27, 2017, with representaties of the M.V. Marathassa, which was the source of the oil, as well as the Ship Source Oil Pollution Fund.
The SOPF responsible for paying these claims under the Marine Liability Act.

“It’s ridiculous that more than three years after an oil spill in Vancouver, taxpayers are still footing the bill,” Robertson said in a news release. “While we’re repeatedly told that there is a world-class spill response system for oil tankers in Canada, our experience shows otherwise.
“Instead, we have to continue to put legal resources into fighting our case and chasing repayments," the mayor added. "This is yet another reason why the city has taken a definitive stand against the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion. If we can’t even get $550,000 recovered—from a small bunker fuel spill that took place in calm conditions—why should we have faith that we’ll be protected from the costs of a major oil spill?”
On April 6, the City of Vancouver filed a notice of civil claim against the owner of the vessel for damages, interest, and court costs.

And this has what to do with oil tankers ? Shall we ban all ocean going vessels from the port of Vancouver ?

Funny isn't it? People who are screaming when we take oil out of the ground, scream even louder when we return it.
I doubt if many citiots know what the surface they are driving on is made out of and don't care as long as the potholes are filled and the lines painted every year or two.

I don't give a dam.

I like building them.

I wonder how long before offshore rigs are up and running off the shores of the Queen Charlotte Islands?

Not soon enough. I was in highschool when the dumb bastards in Ottawa put a ban on drilling on the wet coast and now I am close to retiring and we still haven't been able to drill.

And this has what to do with oil tankers ? Shall we ban all ocean going vessels from the port of Vancouver ?

That is what Mayor moonbeam recently proposed. I often wonder just what is in an orange julius?

I think it's pretty safe to say that the most rabid tree huggers and protestors are driven by emotions much more than knowledge and often because their knowledge about most facets of life is so limited, they feel they can come across as an authority about something, by screaming and shouting. They shun making decisions or taking risks.

IT'S OFFICIAL

We bought the pipeline. It's a Crown.

$4.5B...a bargain.

At first glance it sounds like good news- definitely for the short term! For the long term, I'm just concerned it will clinch a second term for Pretty Boy aka Tater Tot.

I've been watching the ticker since opening.

Energy, minerals and cheese are heading up.

Now is the time to build more pipelines using the Crown Corp brand.

It could snowball.
