OTTAWA — Most of what is billed as the largest, one-time benefit payment in federal history is likely to hit suburban voters living in federal ridings where the Conservatives can be considered the party to beat, an analysis by The Canadian Press shows.

Others will put it to a more productive use I'm sure. My children are too old for me to benefit but I've never liked these programs that pick and choose winners according to some arbitrary demographic. This program, however, is much better than universal daycare.

Editor: The barrage of blatant vote buying ads has arrived on television and in the mail.
A cheque for $2,460 made out to “Mom and Dad” adorns the cover of our MP’s ad mail, which the taxpayers of Canada paid for.
What’s notable is the deception of what is not mentioned. These UCCB (universal child care benefit) payments are fully taxable, at rates between 20 and 45 per cent here in B.C.
Furthermore, the child amount deduction of $2,255 per child has been eliminated on the 2015 personal tax return. That will cost every parent $451 in additional taxes for every child. So, mom and dad, you’d better not spend that new “benefit,” because you’ll have to pay back most of it next April when you file your taxes.

Well, I'm not an accountant but there looks like some funky math going on in this post.

First, OK $2460 is $205 more than the $2255 tax credit, but if you do owe an additional $451 in taxes (which should depend on your bracket/income level), you're $246 down per kid.

Second issue: $451 is not most of $2460. If this guy really thinks so, I wouldn't want him doing my taxes...
