What don't you get about the fact that just giving people money is a stupid idea?

People waste it on useless ****.

You mean irresponsible people waste it. Didn't you say you wanted a new video game every month?

See when my kids were young, and the child tax credit/baby bonus (whatever the hell it was called at the time) came in, it was actually spent on the kids. Money collected through the summer months was pooled and spent on back to school, in the fall it went towards winter boots and snowsuits.

My point is that these people exist and you have to consider whether the consequences are worth giving the freedom of choice in each circumstance.

Just giving a handout is not a guarantee that the money will be used for its intended purpose.

We are more efficient when we know those resources are used for whatever purpose they are labeled.

Since when is it a stupid idea to let people have their own money? Do you really think big government has better spending habits than working people?

You are just so wrong on so many counts.A perfect example of why leftys must never be given access to the public purse or the ability to tax.

Debt is 'your money'?

That Liberal sense of entitlement is strong with this one.

If Jim Flaherty were still alive he would give you a good scolding and tell you to live within your means.

Anyway, Conservatives are the party of giving you the freedom to do what you want with your money.

And that includes giving it back to the Conservatives.

New child benefits may not be worth as much as advertised, experts say | CTV News

The federal government has begun mailing its new monthly Universal Child Care Benefit cheques to parents, but some experts say the benefit isn’t worth as much as advertised.

The UCCB has been promoted in television ads as providing nearly $2,000 annually for each child under age six, and $720 yearly for children aged six to 17.

However, some parents may not realize that the UCCB is not only taxable, but also coincides with the elimination of the Child Tax Credit.

A typical family with two children under the age of six will get $320 per month, but high-and middle-income earners will lose roughly a third of that through taxes. Another $30 per child will be clawed back through the elimination of the child tax credit.

“On the one hand they’re giving more money, on the other hand they’re taking it away,” said tax expert Fred O’Riordan of Ernst & Young LLP.

Liberal finance critic John McCallum said the Conservative government’s decision to roll out the cheques now and then tax them later was “purely political.”

“It’s purely intended to make people think they’re getting more than they really are,” McCallum said.

“A lot of Canadians won’t think about tax,” he added. “They hear a bigger dollar amount so they think more money.”

McCallum said the Liberals’ proposed child benefit would be tax free. It would provide up to $6,400 annually for every child under six and up to $5,400 annually for children aged six to 17. The benefit would vary depending on the family’s income, and 90 per cent of families would get it. A typical family of four earning $90,000 a year would receive a tax-free monthly cheque of $490 under the Liberal plan.

Instead of sending out cheques, the NDP has proposed creating one million daycare spaces that cost parents no more than $15 per day.

The UCCB is not giving taxpayers back their own money. It's a benefit not a deduction. You get the benefit whether you pay taxes or not. And the benefit is taxable.

The government is giving people money for having children, and then taxing them on it. They are not giving them back tax money or reducing their taxes. It's free money plus more tax. And that money comes general taxation. It's wealth redistribution from tax payers to families with children. Wrap your head around it. This isn't consistent with your cut-taxes-let-people-keep-their-money ideology. This isn't the Conservative party being conservative. This is tax and spend... and tax again.

Which is why both the Liberals and NDP have no plans to repeal it (though I'm sure they would alter it) if they came into power.

I still think it would be more appropriate to put that into daycare or some program that represents the whole purpose of the benefit.

Maybe it's time to let the people decide how the money is to be spent, of course there's a small fraction who may squander it but I'm guessing the majority will put it to good use, which is more than I can say for Gov't bureaucrats 3 months before an election.

I agree, but as it is, it isn't even that bad. The problem is the shameless electioneering of it and the way Pierre Poilievre has reduced himself to an infomercial barker. Not to say that he had far to go reaching that new low, but still. Conservative voters should be angry that their party is bribing voters with government handouts. It kinda betrays that they had no ideological principles in the first place. Just love of party.

Since the UCCB is a benefit derived from tax revenue, the only people deciding how the money is spent are the beneficiaries. The taxpayers who pay for the UCCB are not deciding.

How do you know it didn't come from crown resource leases or investment revenues?

There is a negligible benefit to the economy because the quantum is so low.

So no benefit for those earning a nontaxable income all the way up to it being taxable? Being income it even ups the GST/PST payouts.

Same can be said about OAS. Maybe they're wasting the money on video games too?
