Based on 2002 statistics, white mothers obtain 55.5 percent of abortions. Black mothers obtain 36.6 percent of abortions and mothers of other races obtain the remaining abortions.
Women 25 or older obtain the most abortions (49.1 percent). Women 20-24 obtain 33.4 percent of the abortions, and women 19 and younger obtain 17.5 percent of the abortions.
Married women account for 18.2 percent of all abortions. Unmarried women have 81.8 percent of all abortions. Of reporting states, 60.5 percent of abortions were performed on women who had at least one previous live birth.
Of the states reporting, 45.6 percent of women who had abortions already had at least one previous abortion. In fact, in Maryland, 71.5 percent of women seeking an abortion already had a previous abortion. Maryland (71.5 percent), Massachusetts (50.5 percent), New York (52.6 percent), and Ohio (56 percent) constituted those states where the majority of abortive women had a previous abortion.
