Democracy doesn't have to be just one form of voting. Referenda are democratic. Elections are democratic. Protests are democratic. Ever been to one? One popular chant is "this is what democracy looks like!" And it is.
Certain small towns in New England still do all business by popular referendum. With the expansion of the internet, this may become possible nationwide. Be interesting.

referendums are the result of a broken democratic process. they are held in order to get the result someone wants but is unble to get by normal democratic means.

Wrong. It's a method sitting governments use to forego having to make a decision that they feel is politically unpopular. The government is not blamed when a referendum decides an issue.
