It's not like they haven't spent money on it. Remote projects receive as little as 25% of the funding once the consultants and planners are done. It is seriously challenging to get anything done properly.

First Nations have to do it for themselves opposed to having Ottawa deal with it on their behalf.

Not disagreeing that Northern infrastructure projects are very expensive and fiscally inefficient, but I'd still rather see our tax dollars go towards improving quality of life for Canadians in this country than funding abortions in Africa.

Regardless of how the money is spent, we should not be wasting our money interfering in affairs in other countries and/or continents.

Part of the problem is that a lot of FN don't take maintenance of the treatment plants seriously when it is turned over for them to run.

In fairness, when they're living in houses like this, continuous maintenance of a treatment plant would probably seem like a low priority.

Agreed which is part of the whole maintenance argument, when community owned housing infrastructure is being ignored by representatives elected to over see it. How can one expect them to maintain a water system to supply the run down homes?

Which leads to the next question where is the money being spent that is budgeted to maintain communal infrastructure?

By neglecting the maintenance of infrastructure budgeted for year after year on a smaller scale, it will compound up to one big bill that nobody can afford in a few years.

How much is a $6 2x4 worth after crossing the 55 the parallel? How about a sheet drywall or 20L bucket of paint? How about sacks of activated carbon and chlorine pucks? Cant be cheap and nothing is getting cheaper.

It's a bitch to maintain anything when the nearest place to buy materials is 800km away. When systems are installed are spare parts stockpiled? Are systems standardized? Can one village send a spare part to another if needed? Who manages the procurement and stores of the systems, parts and consumables?

That is all coming across the board with well trained indigenous professionals in all fields. We already know their lawyers. When communities develop from within there is pride and respect in their work. There is no lack of skill or ability amongst their people.

It's a 1000 year old discussion about colonization, native rights, and how to live. I'm seeing no evidence that Canada has been right about everything so far given the scandalous history of our past. Pick any decade since confederation. Designed for the elite by the elite and now more like hogs to a trough up to their eyes in debt and carrying on like jackasses with zero accountability. The other guy is worse is how it goes.

That's true but the problem is to keep them working on the reserve after they've gotten training and experience

Maybe that's where ownership of private property and business comes in.

Reality is there are some spectacular locations that would go for big money if they were in Parry Sound. In the long run that is worth something.
