IS Greed REALLY inherent in humans? We know of all sorts of primitives societies that functioned by sharing with equitable contributions from everyone. I'm not sure greed wasn't something even extant in their world, or at least not nearly as prominent as it is since the existence of capitalist society.
Greed is very much the prevalent driving force of society today, we only function with a high standard of living because we're continually exploiting the third world for out benefit. WE only exist because colonists looking for gold and other treasures massacred all the original inhabitants on the land which we live today. WE'RE A ****ING BY-PRODUCT OF GREED.
You are still completely, and conveniently, ignoring the fact that the individual in the OP was able to commit his crime by preying upon the
generosity of many, many people. To the tune of $450K in fact. How was he able to do that when clearly WE'RE A ****ING BY-PRODUCT OF GREED?????
Seriously relax a bit guy, you're going to give yourself a stroke. Don't say I didn't warn you.
$450K made.
$280K he has to pay back.
=$130K profit for 15 months jail time which he will be out of in 9 or 10.
Unfortunately, crime does pay.
He needs to have to pay it all back AND he should pay punitive damages (like everything else he owns) + jail time.
Where in the hell they pulled the $280K from I don't know. Doesn't seem to make any sense at all, he should not only be paying back everything he took, he should be paying back more.
If they meet CE (European standards), get more insurance.
Back to my gripe about charitiies..
It turns out I'm not the only one who finds the pink crap to be a scam...
Pink Ribbons Inc. by Léa Pool - NFB
I can remember seeing a pretty decent documentary about the "business of charity" a few years back. Can't remember the name, sorry I googled, but it spoke to the industry that was created out of these ribbon campaigns and wristband campaigns (trinkets, toys, lunchboxes...branding, that kind of thing). Interesting stuff and definitely made a good case for the argument like these pink ribbon campaigns take on a life of their own and leave the 'charitable' part far behind. It may have been on The Passionate Eye, but it was a few years ago.
