Pretty much all the money our Lions club raises stays within the community. Not very often that there is a local request that one of our members doesn't know or know about personally.
I'm Lions as well. Our biggest charity is Big Brothers and Sisters.

... Or at least some kind of extreme weight-loss program like that.

lol Cool. A cartoon for 7 year old up-and-coming capitalists. I saw one like that about capitalists for up-and-coming 7 year old socialists, too. It was just as simple-minded.
Hey...you have to wait until 67 and on CPP before you can sit around complaining about Socialist programs and benefits.

$450K made.
$280K he has to pay back.
=$130K profit for 15 months jail time which he will be out of in 9 or 10.

Unfortunately, crime does pay.

He needs to have to pay it all back AND he should pay punitive damages (like everything else he owns) + jail time.

IS Greed REALLY inherent in humans? We know of all sorts of primitives societies that functioned by sharing with equitable contributions from everyone. I'm not sure greed wasn't something even extant in their world, or at least not nearly as prominent as it is since the existence of capitalist society.
Greed is very much the prevalent driving force of society today, we only function with a high standard of living because we're continually exploiting the third world for out benefit. WE only exist because colonists looking for gold and other treasures massacred all the original inhabitants on the land which we live today. WE'RE A ****ING BY-PRODUCT OF GREED.

You are still completely, and conveniently, ignoring the fact that the individual in the OP was able to commit his crime by preying upon the generosity of many, many people. To the tune of $450K in fact. How was he able to do that when clearly WE'RE A ****ING BY-PRODUCT OF GREED?????

Seriously relax a bit guy, you're going to give yourself a stroke. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Where in the hell they pulled the $280K from I don't know. Doesn't seem to make any sense at all, he should not only be paying back everything he took, he should be paying back more.

If they meet CE (European standards), get more insurance.

Back to my gripe about charitiies..

It turns out I'm not the only one who finds the pink crap to be a scam...

Pink Ribbons Inc. by Léa Pool - NFB

I can remember seeing a pretty decent documentary about the "business of charity" a few years back. Can't remember the name, sorry I googled, but it spoke to the industry that was created out of these ribbon campaigns and wristband campaigns (trinkets, toys, lunchboxes...branding, that kind of thing). Interesting stuff and definitely made a good case for the argument like these pink ribbon campaigns take on a life of their own and leave the 'charitable' part far behind. It may have been on The Passionate Eye, but it was a few years ago.

We look to the judge to do his job and here he did, not enough time in my view but he gave
the guy jail time. We have some who blame capitalism, and that is not the issue here. I
give to things like everyone else, but I think these scams flourish because we as citizens
don't do our job. We should ask questions and find out who we are dealing with. In this
case the stores also are a bit to blame. they should have asked a lot more questions before
allowing their shop to be used. We all want to believe the intent of others is good however
we are aware there are scoundrels everywhere so the only way to protect legitimate charities
is to expose the fakes right from the start.
On one hand many people want to believe the best in people so they give without enough
questioning.
On the other hand we have people taken in by phony investments because they succumb
to greed without asking enough questions.

Sounds like a government worker.

I'm seeing lots of "Made in Vietnam" these days. Is the Chinese version better than Vietnam's?

Work boots seem to be better quality in Vietnam. Had the same brand made in both countries.

The big question is after paying his liar is there any money left for fines or paying back victims.
