There have been 18 US school shootings this year. Is it time to arm teachers?

Fix the kids and the school shootings and suicides won't be an issue

That's become harder. They have rights and the schools do not have the authority that they once did. And I am not talking about discipline. I'm talking about compulsory guidance or doctor's visits. As well, there used to be fewer problems dealing with the parents of troubled teens.

The world continues to evolve too.

The philosophy for the red/green doors is that most gunmen are on a mission and they know time is at a premium. They aren't playing with a full deck and will chase targets of opportunity. Locked doors aren't worth trying to breech. The original idea came from the US. It is successful. Much more than telling kids to run for the exit doors.

There has been quite a few false alarm lock downs. It just scares the shit out of kids and desperate parents who hear about it on the news and freak out.

Yes, but that is because if the school doesn't act, and the threat is real, lawsuits and bad press result. More schools are being retrofitted with locked front doors. The secretary or office staffer has to buzz them in. They only get access to the office. The door out is locked as well. Very much like a minimum security jail.

Obviously there are agencies monitoring fascistbook et al but a full time cop that makes a point of interacting with kids can have far better grasp on what going on and can intervene early.

Yes, that is the main job of a police officer at the school. He is called by different names - resource officer, community relations, liaison officer, etc, but the job is still the same. In the service, we used to call it waving the flag.

Officers are given special training to deal with teens. They are always around and most students get comfortable with them. When there is the odd bit of trouble, the kids will go and get him, if the school staff hasn't done so already.

Yes, but not every school board can afford it. It will catch on though. I'd like to know what percentage of HS have the community relations officer program running.

If we give guns to nuts, they'll start shooting each other. It's win-win.

As a group, the British aren't very smart. This is what I mean. They'd do very well with guns.

Can we, as adults, build some sort of bridge?

17 kids are dead and kids will die tomorrow.

Can we not come together to....as adults.....to save the next kids who will die?

**** you!

Then the focus has to be on the kids first and foremost. It's obvious they are suffering and don't see a future.

It's doubtful. Humans aren't very good at looking after others. Change always happens slowly.

Trump's latest idiotic statement is that they should pay teachers bonuses for carrying.

I can tell you exactly what will happen to those teachers. They will all be shot dead one by one by the police as they secure the school room by room. And the police would be right to do so, as they have no idea what they are up against, moment by moment. They can't take the chance that THEIR death is lurking behind every door and will not expend a second to analyse whether the person holding the gun is a good guy or a bad guy (if they even have the means to tell). Would you?

I can visualize Trump on the phone with Wayne LaPierre, a few nights ago: " What do I say, now?"

Collateral damage.
