Re: Alberta's coal phase-out: How the province plans to kick carbon to the curb

I think the financial cost to Canadians should be discussed with the energy east pipeline,
in the end,Canadians will recognize we are being hosed big time,
in the end, agendas will be fullfilled,
i figure the masterminds of the energy east pipeling are using Canadians as lobbyists, making fools out of people like me.

The financial cost of the p/l is being borne by the private sector, but on that note, many thousands of people will be employed and pay taxes into the system as opposed to looking to gvt for cash.

As far as the lobby groups are concerned, the biggest are the anti-pipeline groups that are vocal about Canada's proposed lines but awfully silent on the +10,000 miles that have been built in the USA since Mr. Obama took office.

So what? You are trying to derail the thread by taking it in a different direction. My post pointed out that the Germans are tying to move away from fossil fuels and only used coal as a back up. So far nothing you have posted disproves that. Of course lignite is dirty - that is why Germany has constructed so many solar and wind facilities.

... And those solar & wind facilities are failing due to the cessation of subsidies.

Makes one think about it, eh?

Umm - I believe that lignite is coal, so exactly what did I forget?

There are different types of coal. SOme burn cleaner than others. Germany has lots of what is referred to as brown coal, which is the dirtiest burning kind.
Modern coal plants can be made to burn as clean as NG or the two can be combined. Most often when you dig into the background of anyone opposed to coal they are just a shill for nuclear power.

~ Germany is awesome green.

~ No, Germany uses the dirtiest kind of coal, and is planning on using more of it.

~ You're derailing the thread.

Ideally you want to get rid of coal for environmental (and health related) reasons, but it all depends on how you want to achieve emissions reductions for your jurisdiction.

Oil tumbles below $28 per barrel

Ralph Klein wants his budget maker back.

Oil Tumbles on Ample Supply With Volatility Near Seven-Year High

Oil tumbled in New York as price volatility climbed to near the highest levels in seven years and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. warned of wider swings to come.

Futures fell as much as 4.7 percent. Volatility is set to “spike” as prices continue to seek an equilibrium, which could drag crude below $20 a barrel, Goldman Sachs predicted. The CBOE Crude Oil Volatility Index, which measures expectations of price swings, rose as high as 71.96, the highest since 2009. The global oil surplus will be bigger in the first half of this year than previously estimated, according to the International Energy Agency.

"This is looking very ugly," said Stephen Schork, president of the Schork Group Inc. in Villanova, Pennsylvania. "We’re headed for $25 and potentially it will break through."

Oil is down about 20 percent this year on speculation a global glut will persist amid the outlook for increased exports from Iran after the removal of international sanctions and brimming U.S. crude supplies. Futures dropped to a 12-year low of $26.19 in January. Drillers in the U.S. idled the most rigs since April last week as inventories rose above 500 million barrels to the highest since 1930.

West Texas Intermediate for March delivery slipped $1.09, or 3.7 percent, to $28.60 a barrel at 1:01 p.m. on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices touched $28.40, the lowest since Jan. 21. Total volume traded was 49 percent higher than the 100-day average.

Good for gasoline prices so it's good for the typical consumer. A good news thread for a change.

Yes it's better but is it low enough to reflect acuratly the corresponding price paid for the crude. I don't think so. We're still getting ripped off, oil dropped 60% gas didn't even now when the last expensive barrels are through the system.

Re: Oil tumbles below $28 per barrel

Ah, for the good old days, when we were all wasteful, happy fops, dashing from mansion to mansion, rubbing clotted cream on our buttocks and kicking the help. What fun! I do miss taunting the poor, with their meager, six figure incomes.

It does give one pause however. What will be the next big moneymaking enterprise? Oh, silly me, I already know! Sadly, I cannot divulge it, or everyone will want in on it.

Business does not exist to tumble!

Re: Oil tumbles below $28 per barrel

Actually this is not good news it is a bad situation for all Canadians economically for the nation
and for workers. We are always talking about Albertan\s out of work when in fact thousand of
Canadians from across the country are suffering.
It is time to start building east west pipelines and refineries while interest rates are low and the
country needs jobs. We also need to have the oil industry keep working I would pay higher prices
to keep Canadians working and stop importing.
