Re: BREAKING: Liberals agree to NDP proposal on Electoral Reform

It's like Ezra Levant.

So dumb it's not even worth getting into it.

But hey, if you need facts:

Power & Politics' Ballot Box question: electoral reform - Politics - CBC News

That's, uhh, newer than your poll and 2.5x the sample size.

awkward.....
How did I know you would pull Ezra out of your hat ?

Why have a representative democracy at all, if you want the said representatives to be shackled to vote only as aligned with the wishes of their constituents? A big part of governing is, absolutely, ensuring that the opinions of the people are taken into account; however, governing is also about making the best possible decision in the interests of the country, and these concepts are not always in perfect alignment with one another.
So in other words a pretty smile and perfect teeth are all that is needed to lead the unwashed .

Ezra is a sarcastic idiot!
So does that preclude him from having an opinion ?
Do you have to respect his opinion ?
Do you have to agree with his opinion ?

Absolutely we hire our MPs to do the work of the country for us. We do not expect to be consulted on every aspect of their job.

We do not hire them to unilaterally change the rules of hiring .

They must consult the people directly before they change the very basics of the electoral system. Full stop. Otherwise they are overstepping their bounds as employees...........

Re: BREAKING: Liberals agree to NDP proposal on Electoral Reform

Half of the respondents in your poll only 'somewhat agree' so I'm sure we can figure out what that somewhat is in order to avoid an unnecessarily costly referendum.

Either way, the committee will gauge what folks want and if it's a referendum, then they might provide a referendum if they feel it is necessary.

And if Canadians choose ranked ballot, then the Conservatives can gloat about how they forced a referendum that lead to Liberal majorities for the next 50 years.

Indications are that in any fair choice, Canadians will chooses FPTP, which makes this entire damned Liberal stupidity a massive waste of time and money.

If they choose the preferential ballot, so be it. That would be my second choice.

I would find any change not taken to the people unacceptable.

I would find a choice that includes members taken from party lists to be outrageous.

But, anything would be legitimate, if the people are offered the choice, because the electoral system, more than any other facet of gov't, belongs to the people, not the pinheads, the high foreheads, the politicians, the academics, the talking heads.....or even the political junkies like me.......

Does the law/constitution allow electoral reform to be made without a referendum?

I'm no lawyer, but IMHO, yes....of course it does.

What is legal is not necessarily right. Nor should it be accepted.

We should keep the system we have, it works good and I am sure will be just as effective at getting Mr. Trudeau out as it was at getting him in.

Yea the never ending swaps of the same two parties is a great system.

No, we need proportional representation.

This will preserve not only a balanced federal parliament, but will also preserve the effectiveness of local candidates.

Then I guess you, and those with a like mind, should have been lobbying well before now to ensure a referendum was needed. Waiting till the last minute shows that either you really didn't care about this or you were lazy.

But it was proven about 10 years ago to be an inferior system! It's been researched up the ying yang!

Excuse me?

The last minute?

We've been fighting with the idiots of the Liberal Party for months......and they have only been in power for 6 months.

In other words, WTF are you talking about?

Did you expect a constitutional amendment before the election just in case a vicious idiot that cared naught about democracy or the people was elected?

Bull****.

It will further centralize power in Canada, and put people in the House that are only responsible to the party, and not the people.

Re: BREAKING: Liberals agree to NDP proposal on Electoral Reform

I am sure that you will be delighted to hear then, Colpy, that this committee is being charged with exactly that — conducting a broad and national consultation with Canadians to hear, from us, what we would like to see in respect of electoral reform.

It will be interesting to see just how they intend to do that, FP.

No, it's definitely the better system.

It creates more minority governments which is a good thing.

Re: BREAKING: Liberals agree to NDP proposal on Electoral Reform

It's time to go with a Republic.

I vote for a Monarchy, petros. We could work out a deal with the Brits whereby William and Kate become our King and Queen. It would be sooooo cool. Think about all the fun their kids could have playing with Justin and Sophie's little ones. Think of the optics. Toronto could refurbish Casa Loma for their digs. I just don't see a downside. ;-)
