The deaths of civilains is horrifying but what I can't get my head around is what kind of person cuts off fingers and keeps them as trophies? What does it take to turn someone into the type of person who would harbour such blind hatred against a people? Is it the nature of war? Is it a pre-existing condition within the human psyche just waiting for the right time to emerge and wreak havoc?

We send our children to war hoping that they will serve with honor and hopefully come home safely. How do we equip them to deal with monsters within their own ranks?

I hear you, of course there is no one any worse than the Nazi war criminals in W.W.2, but what is really baffling is there were dozens if not hundreds or thousands of them- I know most of us can never see ourselves being that way, but "something" gets a hold of these people and the only thing I can think of is greed or is it an escalation of "bullying"? Wish someone had the answers.

My guess is there were many more incidents of this nature that has taken place in both Iraq and Afghanistan....its just that they have remained secret, protected by thier fellow comrades and thier superiors. It only comes to light when the very rare soldier cannot live with what goes on and reveals to the world the actions of his fellow soldiers (if you can call them soldiers). Like the Nazis, they were likely just `following orders`. As well, when we have a yellow-bellied media that will rarely follow up on such crimes...or even report such crimes to its populace once caught, then those perpetrators feel they have full reign in committing war-crimes. They see thier presidents and members of congress enact and carry out war-crimes against innocent populations and in turn, held high on a pedestal, write books about and paid millions to speak for years afterwards.

God bless America?

I think not.

Fear. That is all.

Maybe if we are nice to them they won't hurt us.

Christians are easy targets. Muslims are forever burning down churches. I am pretty sure there are bibles somewhere inside of them. Where is the rage?

JBeee, do you ever smile? Do you ever have anything to say that is not dripping with hatred?

It's nothing new Y.J. there's two or three like that on here. Look at the good side- these guys just lend more credibility to the rest of us!

As I was reading the article in Rolling Stone - sickening as it was - I started to think about the Viet Nam war and the atrocities that took place there. As is mentioned in the article the use of all kinds of drugs seems to be widespread as it was in Viet Nam - I am wondering if there might be a connection there? I am not talking about smoking a few doobies here, I mean the hard drugs that that troops are able to get their hands on.
