AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Republican-dominated Texas Legislature pushed Monday to enact wide-ranging restrictions that would effectively shut down abortion clinics across the nation's second most-populous state, and Democrats planned an old-fashioned marathon filibuster to stop the final vote.

After the House easily approved it Monday morning, the wide-ranging package of anti-abortion measures was headed to the Senate. But with the special session scheduled to end at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, the clock presented a far bigger obstacle than the votes to win approval there.

Although Texas is just the latest of several conservative states to try to enact tough limits on abortions, the scope of its effort is notable both because of the combination of bills being considered and the size of the state. The proposal would ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy, require doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals, limit abortions to surgical centers and stipulate doctors must monitor even non-surgical abortions.

When combined in a state 773 miles wide and 790 miles long and with 26 million people, the measures become the most stringent set of laws to impact the largest number of people in the nation.

They tried ban abortions in the town I used to live in so the doctors shut down the hospital for one morning and they were successful in getting rid of the anti-abortionists. I don't see anything wrong with limiting abortions after 20 weeks unless there are risks to the mother or fetus though.

All this does is reinforce in peoples minds that the Republicans want to ban Abortion under any and all circumstances.
It takes those that believe there should be some restrictions and force them into the pro choice side when they see bills like this or the one in the Good Ol Boy State of Mississippi.

The proposal would ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy,

So, they're not even going to pretend to be pro-life, just anti-abortion. Most abortions done to save a mother's life are done later than 20 weeks

require doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals,

I'm sorry, but are you seriously telling me that they didn't need to be practicing doctors before? That's actually kind of scary.

limit abortions to surgical centers

Hmmm..... again I'm a bit confused as to where women were getting them done before. It's a bit scary to think that something as serious as an abortion is taking place without the facilities to deal with an emergency

and stipulate doctors must monitor even non-surgical abortions.

As someone who feels abortions are the best example right now of how women's reproductive health is not valued in our society, this again makes me go 'seriously, that wasn't a rule before?'

Someone needs to draw the line somewhere. I guess its a matter of ....when. Do you allow abortions up to 9 months? I don't have a problem with any of what they're proposing at all. Guess women just need to make up their minds sooner rather than later. Afterall, they're not BANNING abortions. As difficult a decision it is, procastination won't make it go away so the regulations make sense to me.

A practicing Doctor doesn't necessarily have admitting privileges at a local hospital. Other states have passed similar laws. In Mississippi, a Doctor applied for admitting privileges after a similar law was passed and was turned down. In other states, the Doctors see such small numbers of patients, that they don't meet the requirements to have admitting privileges at the local hospitals.

In my opinion, it's no less a baby at 2 months than at 9, but the big difference is, the proportion of women needing life saving abortion. Over 20 weeks, very few women get abortions, and it's often due to a medical complication. Giving people carte blanche when it's about convenience, and then banning it when it's about the mother's health.... that's backwards.

I can see that happening. How much money will doctors lose if they can't perform abortions willy nilly like they can now.

Ah, okay, that makes sense. I was just picturing something akin to their plastic surgery industry, where dentists were putting in breast implants.

I'm sure delivering a baby is more profitable than an abortion, especially with current C section rates.

Have you tried eating soup with a fork? You'll find it more rewarding than talking sense to an anti-abortion nutbar.

Do not try to tell me who I should or should not be talking to, especially when referring to someone I count a friend.
