Star Trek icon George Takei has fuelled with his feud with former co-star William Shatner by revealing he was the only member of the sci-fi TV show's cast who didn't realise he was gay.
Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu on the show, has been at odds with Shatner for years and in a new TV appearance on comedian Bill Maher's political show Real Time, he took aim at the actor for being too self-centred to realize Takei was a homosexual.
He says, "My colleagues did know but they were cool about it because they knew that if I made a public statement about it or made it very obvious, then my career would be destroyed. But it just went right over his head. He was the only one that didn't know.
"At the end of the week we have our wrap parties and they (cast and crew) bring their wives and husbands and boyfriends or girlfriends, and I quite regularly brought 'a buddy'."
Takei further slams Shatner, admitting it was often difficult working with him.
He adds, "Canadians have a certain image of being even-tempered and friendly and all that. Well, he is a person who is that way with himself. He is very self-centred.
"We work together and we're professionals, so we get the work done, but it's with a lot of difficulty."

So. . . Takei is criticising Shatner for not fitting the Canadian stereotype? You might think a gay man closeted for decades'd be a mite more careful slinging stereotypes around.

James Doohan (Scotty) couldn't stand Shatner either... :)

Did you know he was shot 8 times on D Day, while serving with the Canadian Army?? His middle finger was shot off...........a fact carefully hidden in the show.

And he is of Irish descent, not Scots.

Shatner didn't know he was gay?

Or simply didn't care because it was none of his business?

What did George want? A fk'n medal for being gay?

What does he care what Shatner knew or thought about his gayness?

Maybe he didn't ask or mention anything because he already knew from him always bringing a "buddy" to the parties.

Maybe he didn't make such a big deal because it's simply not as much of a big deal in Canada as it is in the US. Maybe he knew how to deal with it because he was Canadian?

Or maybe all the other cast knew but didn't make a big deal about it because it would ruin his career..... and Shatner also knew but was such an awesome actor that he played the role of ignorance too well that even George was fooled about him not knowing that he knew that he knew that he didn't know but really did know like he knows now.

Then again maybe Shatner was and is self centred..... Get the fk over it.

Long-Term Grudge-Holding Uppity Priss..... Canada says Hi.

He was a Foo in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery.

And my opinion of Takei is that he needs to move on, get a life even.

Anyone seen the Shatner roast?

Yes Takei apparently had no problem appearing at that. My guess is that there was money involved.

I believe he even hugged him when it was over.

I'd be cranky too if I had to survive off of the convention circuit.

Just think of how many boat shows Bob Denver had to suffer through over the last 50 years.
