A new GG will be selected this year. I believe a fantastic, intellectual pick would be, Preston Manning. Manning for GG.
I'm fine with the one we have. I'm also fine with Parson Manning. I like him, but don't think he's very good at speechifying. One can always learn, though. Hillier could be cool. He's quite bright.

How about 5Paradox? He seems to have a grip on gov't workings and is good at posting if not speechifying. :D

Brother, i just hope they stay away from politically correct 'representative' types on the one side, and political hacks and fools like Manning on the other.

Frankly we have not had a really successful GG since Georges Vanier, who died in office in 1967. Everyone else has had a 'small agenda' to hustle, at the expense the large one of national unity, and has been unable to rise above politics to synthesize a vision of Canada's origins, real identity and future.

Frankly i don't have any confidence that Harper will rise above his own petty and ideological inclinations and choose someone of that calibre.

Now, that Five Paradox has been considered/suggested, I feel confident to nominate for the utterly useless, phony and powerless position of governor General, the person who knows everything about everything, who never makes any mistakes, who would NEVER consider apologizing for even the most eggregious errors, who would represent Canada abroad as an all-knowing and internationally savvy and wise envoy, and most of all, would have the enthusiastic and unanimous approval of EVERYONE on this forum:

Did you say intellectual? Preston Manning is about as intellectual as a toad. So far as I am concerned there is no reason not to keep the one we have.

Actually, Manning is an extremely bright guy.....without charisma.

Idiots do NOT have the capability to create and make successful complete new parties in the Canadian political spectrum.....especially when they destroy old parties in the process........

But, (and this is new to be) the G-G is also the honourary commander of the Royal 22 Regiment, and for THAT reason needs to be fluent in French........I am not sure that Manning qualifies.

* snorts* Now where in Canuckville do you think anyone would look for someone of that caliber? It isn't like they grow on trees, you know.
So, instead of moaning about everyone else's suggestions, come up with your own.

Um, one of the points of a GG is to be diplomatic, not treating everyone else like morons. Bad choice, Jack.

AnnaG, I am somewhat disappointed that you did not see the attempted humour and sarcasm in my post.

He is one of the possible choices I heard last night on the news. There were also a couple of Conservatives as possibilities, which doesn't surprise me..... but the one that caught my eye was Wayne Gretzky as reported there are some facebook groups etc. trying to get him as our next GG.

Yeah.... Wayne Gretzky in charge of the Canadian Military.... Chief and Commander!

Next we'll have Don Cherry for Prime Minister.

Every time our troops are sent into battle, we'll have someone playing "Dun Dun Dun Doo Du Doooo...... Charge!" on an organ, soldiers being careful not to advance on offside, and every so often in the middle of a fire fight, one soldier on each side will come out, drop gloves and beat the tar out of each other.

Who would be best as Gov. General?

I like the one we have now, but if we were to have a new one......

I don't think we want a Governor General who is an American citizen and hasn't lived in Canada for ten years or so.
Question, why was Michaëlle Jean allowed to be the GG being she was from another country, is he not dual citizen? :canada:

Awesome choice! He's a bit loud, though. Maybe Ron James?
