Re: Harper vows free vote on gay marriage
Jay, traditional "marriage" has not been affected even a teeny tiny bit (mine hasn't).
The only people who undermine the definition of "marriage"--lifelong commitment; vows before the community, each other, God or any combination thereof; "'til death do us part"; 'honour and cherish', etc-- are those who break their vows through adultery and divorce. I have some sympathy for the linguistic sticklers who say civil unions with ALL the rights and privileges of hetero marriage should be sufficient because they have some nostalgic fetish for the word "marriage".
Still, it's nothing a little pedanticide couldn't cure
and language continually evolves.
It's at this point that my sympathy for the infintesimally small group of non-bigots who oppose SS "marriage" vanishes and I say," Our default position should be inclusivity not exclusivity."
