Squirrel knocks out power for 5,400 customers in Halifax neighbourhood

HALIFAX — Nova Scotia’s power utility, which has blamed blackouts on everything from crows and seagulls to “salty fog” over the last decade, said Friday an electrocuted squirrel left a swath of suburban Halifax in the dark.

The furry critter scaled a transformer in a substation in the Hammonds Plains area just before 5 p.m. Thursday, Nova Scotia Power said Friday.

Spokeswoman Bev Ware said the squirrel became a conduit for the electricity, which subsequently caused roughly 5,400 customers to lose power.

The animal was electrocuted and died at the scene. Power was restored within two hours.

Ware said animals were to blame for several other power outages over the last year, although she wouldn’t name specific species. She said the utility has taken measures to prevent animal-related outages.

“We do have animal guards that we can put in place, but we can’t prevent this from ever happening,” said Ware on Friday. “There’s always going to be some exposed electrical equipment in a substation.”

Crows, raccoons and seagulls have also caused lights to go out in thousands of Nova Scotia homes over the last decade.

The utility even blamed salt in heavy fog for brief, widespread outages in the Halifax area in 2006.

But Halifax author Stephen Kimber, who has written about the issue, said he believes it is not a matter of curious animals or salty fog.

“There are way more outages than I ever remember growing up or even as an adult here, which I think has to do with the cutbacks they’ve had over time and the elimination of a lot of maintenance jobs,” said Kimber, who has lived in the Halifax area for more than six decades.

“You can probably find that there are legitimate examples that Nova Scotia Power is using for certain power failures, but in virtually every storm, even minor rainfalls and snowstorms, the power goes out. Why does the power go out? Because they haven’t put the money into making sure the system has all the backups that it needs.”

Kimber said his comments are only anecdotal, as there is no historical data on power outages in Nova Scotia. He said the utility or an independent body should study whether there are more outages now than in the past, and what has caused the outages historically.

Ontario’s Hydro One acknowledged on Friday that power outages can be caused by animal contact, and it has also dealt with such problems over the past several years.

How do you know the live ones didn't throw a dead one onto whatever the weak link was? Squirrels are smart in that area.

They should import some squirrels from Alberta to train the ones there how to safely navigate around power lines and such.

There are several shocking facts about this story.

The biggest is the continuing threat that squirrels and related species - chipmunks, woodchucks and ground squirrels - pose to Canadians. Canadians expect that their lives will never be threatened, interrupted or made worse by outside or foreign influences. These species are invasive and not native to Canada. They were introduced several hundred years ago by subversive elements from Europe - either Muslims, Communists or the British. Probably all.

Because these creatures are not part of the natural food chain, they pose a danger to natural evolution and the gene pool. They must be irradiated. Whether by poison, shooting or explosives, no trace must be allowed to remain. It's a sad fact: Cute as they may be, these rodents are a threat, not only to our health and safety, but to our mental well being too.

This is especially true during the long, depressing winter months. Suicides peak around Christmas. This is due, in large measure, to these non-native species interacting with Canadians. Their elimination should be the government's first priority - along with Muslims, Communists and the British.

The best evidence of corruption of the gene pool is the British. Scientists from around the world agree that this sub species of homo sapiens carries a regressive gene - please note, not recessive - that affects the natural balance. This includes, but is not limited to: slowing progressive evolution of homo sapiens by inhibiting evolution of fine motor skills, physical traits such as hair loss, tooth decay, male impotence and obesity, disease resistance and the ability to reason.

Understanding the genetic mistake that has occurred with this branch and its coincidental, parallel development is also believed to be a primary cause for disease and infection around the world. This is especially telling as technology progresses, allowing the British to more easily interact with other homo sapiens.

The biggest single effect has been the evolution of travel, specifically by air. It has accelerated corruption of the gene matrix. The British, or more correctly, the Picts and the Scots, have slowed the evolution of homo sapiens because of their unique, but inferior, gene matrix.

It continues to pollute and upset the balance through inbreeding and/or continuance of the digressive gene. This contamination of gene markers slows evolution. Scientists suggest the British as the likely cause for regressive changes to thought and unhealthy, left leaning social, political, and economic ideologies.
