I'm proud of and am fully supportive of our Armed Forces wherever they are deployed. The only conspiracy, here, is the one that prevented you from receiving your Lithium pills, this morning.
Based on my own expertise and experience, here's what I think happened:
Putin pushed hard to help Trump into office, with some level of at least awareness or collusion on the part of Trump and his team.
So now Trump's in office, and Putin wants to see exactly what he's bought. So he decides to test Trump.
So Putin has Assad, who is his dog, and a general-purpose scumbag, launch a shocking chemical attack against civilians.
Trump, who has had plenty of staffing problems, was lucky enough to have replaced Flynn with McMaster, who is something of a hardass, but fortunately deeply apolitical.
McMaster, in his typical blunt but not bullying fashion, tells Trump this is what you need to do for American power, for our place in the world, and to draw a line with Assad, with Putin, and with IS, as well as reassuring the West.
Trump, genuinely appalled by the attack and feeling completely out of his depth, wisely or fortunately listens, and acts.
It was a low-risk option. What does he do next? Who cares? He could do nothing next. Punishing the use of chemical weapons against civilians is a one-off, punitive strike that does not involve boots on the ground, can hardly be credibly criticized, and sends a message to Assad, to Putin, to China, to N. Korea, and to our friends and allies. And aside from various nutbars domestically and around the world (and on this board), who the heck can criticize punishing a sarin gas attack on civilians?
Putin bluffed, Trump, advised by McMaster, called his bluff. We won the hand.
Yes, which will make the meeting this week interesting - of the discussions that are publicly announced. The chess game continues. The ball is in Putin's court, but he has done all he can now. It would be foolish to do any more than bluster.

He did what McMaster told him to do. Which is a good idea for a President with zero experience in governance, military, or foreign affairs. McMaster did everything. Trump just said "Do it." Good for McMaster. Good for Trump.
