He most certainly deserved to be censured for his complicity in the Capitol riots, JLM. However, long before this trial finally got underway - whilst the business of the nation was set aside - the outcome was predicted. There was no way the Dems could garner the majority of votes they needed to impeach. They knew this and they went ahead anyway.

From an outsiders point of view it simply looks spiteful, short-sighted and an expensive exercise in futility.

There is very little that happens in politics that makes sense! After what happened on Jan. 6, I think Democrats were duty bound to at least make an appearance of doing all they could to address the situation properly (get rid of the perpetrator) & the Republicans probably had an obligation to try to restore the party from the shambles caused by their leader and at least do whatever it takes to get another leader A.S.A.P. He'll go down as the disgrace of century!

You've already looked dumb. You don't believe there are people in prisons solely because they were CONVICTED of a crime who never actually did the crime. Did they ever find the guy who ACTUALLY killed O.J. Simpson's wife. Do smart people insult people because of a difference of opinion? People can throw all the "red herrings" they want into the atrocity of January 6, but a million of them will never take the light off Jan. 6. Sleepy makes himself look like an idiot by insulting people he disagrees with. Do you want to look like a "Sleepy"? Talking about "facts". Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who voted “not guilty,” in the trial, offered scathing remarks about Trump after the verdict.
“There is no question that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day,” he said. “The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president.”

I'm wondering if acquittal by the senate carries the same "clout" and degree of legality as acquittal in a court of law by a judge and jury! I think McConnell has characterized the situation in a "nutshell"
