Now there's a topic that goes back a couple years. When our kids were young we used to make root beer every summer. We used a kit from a company called "Hires". Seems to me we used to get about a hundred bottles out of a double batch. The kids thought it was funny to have root beer in coke bottles, 7 up bottles....whatever was available. ....

A&W is not the same i just don't care what ya say it's weaker, like all fountain drinks....hell even coke doesn't have that kick to it anymore...the whole classic thing is now a sham.

My dad for many years was a grocer. He brought home a "Hires" kit along with a promotional plastic keg dispenser that gets cold in the fridge and then sits out on the counter or table top to serve.

We made up a keg of it (a couple of gallons) and had it chilled then set out. I being the generous child I was invited some friends around to sample the stuff and hid them in the back yard. About 7 of us polished the sucker off in less than ten minutes, much to the distress of my parents who actually had people they wanted to have a few laughs with over the whole thing and of course the rest of my family.

Imagine, my dad yelling at me as my friends now obvious in the yard and I puked our guts out all over the flower beds sick from way too much root beer.

Next up the story of the 8 year old boy and pop's golf tourney prize, the twenty pound Hershey Chocolate Bar.

juan, when I was a kid, my aunt would make a big vat of Hires root beer and we'd bottle it in saved pop bottles.

I have made root-beer cupcakes and root-beer icing with the extract that Watkin's sells.

God, are Watkin's still around? We used to see the Watkin's guy about every three months.

juan and doc,

You may see a Watkin's vendor at a craft sale or fair. I don't even know if Watkin's sells door-to-door anymore. I bought my Watkins root-beer extract at the "Marketplace" during last year's Pacific National Exhibition.

I remember the Watkin's salesman....he had a suitcase full of bottles of this, cans of that, a different kind of snake oil for everything that ailed you.

The Watkins Man used to be the "other man" in my mother's life - we all teased her about him...

Root Beer was the first soda pop or any kind of fun drink I ever had.... we finally got Cokes but at Christmas only....and that was another world for us. Everything had sugar in it in those days and my mother had raging diabetes so we decided as a family to keep our sugar consumption to a minimum ...

My mother still made great desserts, pies, cakes, and meals - all without sweeteners except those allowed from fruit/juices.... she would be thrilled to see all the choices we have now.

I like root beer with ice cream. Still, nothing tops Moxie:

I was inspired by another thread to check out this one - had forgotten that we discussed Moxie before. But, in fact, I'm now craving a root beer float and will have to buy the ingredients next time I go shopping.

Big favorite here in Gopherland and in Badgerland. :)
