No, don't stop having the holiday, thats not what I mean. We could use more of them.
Stop celebrating various religious themes as national holidays IS what I mean.
In this more tolerant world, all religions are respected in Canada. That includes athiesm , somehow, too.
Celebrating the day Jesus may or may not have rising from the "dead or nearly dead" state that he may, or may not, have been in after maybe being executed on a cross, is just not doing the job of embracing everyone or celebrating something we all share in.
What national holidays should be [root of the word aside] is things that we all agree should be celebrated. It would be best if they were things that are essential to life on eart of essential to Canadian Culture [and that does NOT include religion of any kind!].
I am thinking a theme like , for eg., National Ozone Day,the way it helps us, how it works is miraculous and essential for life on earth.
I don't think we should celebrate "all of nature" or "the environment" because the message just gets lost in the broad scope. These holidays should raise awareness and celebrate these essential things.
Ok, so not Ozone, but maybe the SUN, or bodily processes like digestion - National Colon Day - or "The Tree" or Mammals Day.
Whatever, i am sure there are suggestions galore. The main point is to get away from religious holidays, as an extension of separating religion and politics. And personally, as a way to start the process of just forgetting all about religions. That would solve half our problems right away, or maybe all of them.
