Every school to get Holocaust specialist under anti-racism initiative

Joanna Sugden

Every secondary school is to get a Holocaust specialist to ensure that the subject is taught comprehensively and sensitively.
One teacher from every school will be offered a place on a Holocaust education training course to combat racism and intolerance.
One in ten of those who take the course will also be able to take a master’s degree module in Holocaust education, as part of a £1.5 million scheme run by the Institute of Education.
Teachers will discuss parts of the subject that they find difficult to teach and work on lesson plans with experts on how to broach the issue.
Stuart Foster, director of the project, said: “There are increasing concerns in society about intolerance and racism. The BNP is coming to the forefront, and there’s increased anti-Semitism.”
The initiative is designed to maintain awareness of the Nazi’s systematic massacre of the Jews during the Second World War as survivor numbers dwindle, Times Educational Supplement reports.
The project will launch on Sunday, the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht — the night in 1938 when 91 Jews were killed, 30,000 were arrested and 191 synagogues were destroyed marking the beginning of the Nazi’s genocide of the Jewish people.
Ruth-Anne Lenga, education consultant at the Jewish Museum, said that the Holocaust was often covered very briefly by schools despite being on the school curriculum. “It could be the emotiveness of the subject worries teachers, or it raises difficult moral challenges and questions. We want to ensure there’s support.”
The project will coincide with a survey testing teachers’ knowledge of the subject and their teaching methods. It will ask teachers for their definition of “Holocaust” and whether they think teaching children about it is important.
The scheme is part of a wider Holocaust education project funded by the Government and the Pears Foundation charity. It is supported by the Holocaust Education Trust, which this year received £1.5 million from the Government to send two sixth-formers from every school to Auschwitz.

Not really sure what this has to do with religion as opposed to history.

Or bigotry.

When it comes to Holocaust history, there are many who would love to rewrite it... we've seen that on this forum many a time. There have been a few that have argued that the Germans couldn't have possibly done all that they're accused of, and the Jews are making half of it up. It boils down to way more than simple religion.

Yep it's good not to forget the mistakes of the past, and a measure of teaching the teachers makes for an accurate passing of the information.

I wouldn't call it religious brain scrubbing though. I think that is seen more in Terrorist Training than in the public school system of Great Britain. Do correct me if I'm wrong though.

I think you have a very focused appreciation of terrorism. The public school system of the British Empire has produced the most capable terrorists for a couple of hundred years. We could not begin to add up the converts (victims) nor even begin to entertain the means.

History is by nature subject to constant revision. Why do you insist that some events do not have to obey natural law. Your comments indicate that you are well aquainted with the history in question, which you have no doubt recieved through the popular media and numerous books and articles. Your interest is laudable. Religion always boils down to more than "simple religion". You could if you liked become more knowlegeable about bigotry.
It is interesting to note that the foremost revisionists of Jewish history are Israeli scholars. I could give you a reading list if you'd like to familiarize yourself with the material.:cool:;-)

Somehow I get the feeling that what will be taught is not open for debate.
I would think a complete and open examination of the whole 1st half of that century needs to be examined in minute detail.

Karrie, if martial law was declared today in Canada who would be the first ones to be arrested? Probably criminals and petty thieves. Then would it be the 'professionals' (doctors, lawyers, teachers, politicians and news reporters)? Do you think just individuals will be arrested or would the whole family be taken. I think it would be 'safer' for those doing the arresting to take everybody. Before you start the tears rolling for some that died in WWII you should make quite sure that their hands were not stained. Germany had about the least amount of Jews die, does that really say Hitler was on a rampage. If you want to shed tears for 6 million then how many more tears will you shed for the other 14 million that also died but are not counted as deserving remembrance.

Sorry, MHz, I won't be sitting around to listen to you rationalize the Holocaust or negate it. This has been done to death as of late.

And as for who I shed tears for... you have no idea how I view war, so don't even try to make assumptions about who I do and do not mourn.

So many people fear discussion of religion and history and it's contemporary flux.

It has nothing to do with fear, and everything to do with simply not being convinced by your arguments. We've been there done this, in numerous threads. It all comes off as lunatic ramblings, and that speaks to the quality of the revisionist argument. Feel free to try to turn it into an emotional issue, but, the fact is that you simply have yet to make a valid argument that doesn't have bigotry at its core.

Not really sure what this has to do with religion as opposed to history.

I think it has a lot to do with religion. I have maintained for a long time now that Nazism and Communism are fully as much religions as Christianity or Islam, they show the same outward traits as most religions.

Thus both Communism and Nazism have a Messiah (Marx, Hitler), at least Communism has Prophets (Lenin, Mao), they have a Holy Book (Das Kapital, Mein Kempf), a set of beliefs (dictatorship of the proletariat, racial superiority etc.), promises of rewards for the followers and threat of punishment, torture for the non believers.

They have killed in the name of their religion, same as Christianity or Islam. Their ultimate aim is world evangelization, same as Islam or Christianity.

As far as I am concerned, Communism or Nazism are fully as much of a religion as Christianity or Islam. Communism and Nazism have nothing to do with Atheism. In a Communist or a Nazi dictatorship, Atheist will be the first to be rounded up and put in concentration camp (same as in a Muslim or a Christian Theocracy).

while I see what you're saying, there's a difference between a zealous opinion, and an actual religion.

It's unfortunate that you are unable to connect the dots, even with crayons.;-)

I prefer sharpie markers thanks, but I don't think this is connect the dots. Unless the dots connect to reveal a surrealistic painting. No, there is no religious connotation to this story, and directing a personal insult as a reply is cliche'.

Bigot========one intolerantly devoted to his/her own opinion

Since you insist on licking and applying the bigot label I have supplied you with the definition so that you may understand that you are one. You are intolerantly devoted to your opinion of the subject matter and refuse to discuss it in any context but your own.

lunatic=========insane

You are crazy to question my sanity bigot.

I will post the links of the revisionist scholars and you can gauge the quality of their argument with your own knowlege base.

You've given A definition of bigotry, not THE definition. To me, being devoted to disliking a group of people due to your stereotypes about them is a much better definition of possessing a bigoted view, and your constant grumbling about 'bankers' and 'capitalists' puts you pretty squarely into that camp. And btw, I never used the label 'bigot', I mentioned only an impression of bigotry in the arguments I've heard in the past. But thanks for the name calling.
