An albino girl has been found decapitated in Mali in what police say was likely a ritual sacrifice, according to reports.
The girl, Djeneba Diarra, who lived in Fana, a village 125 kilometres north of Bamako, was taken Sunday at around 2 a.m. local time, while “sleeping in the courtyard with her mother and her sister,” police told AFP Monday.
The kidnappers climbed a wall with the child, the news agency reports, and her mom tried to give chase but she eventually ran to protect her other daughter who is also albino.
“We demand justice,” activist Mamadou Sissoko told AFP. “Her head was taken. This is a ritual crime.”
Albinism is a congenital disorder characterized by a partial or total lack of pigment in the skin, eyes and hair. In some regions of Africa, including Mali, superstition persists that albino people’s body parts possess magical powers, and dozens are murdered in sacrifices believed to bring good fortune and wealth.
In outrage over the killing, local residents set fire to Fana’s paramilitary police headquarters, according to AFP.

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa police on Tuesday arrested a woman who they say bound and gagged her three daughters, stabbed the eldest repeatedly and set their house on fire.
Police said a patrol officer found 39-year-old Taheerah Ahmad around midday in a vehicle in downtown Tulsa. Ahmad was taken into custody and her seven-year-old daughter who had been reported missing was found safe, police said.
Tulsa Police Officer Jeanne MacKenzie said earlier that the seven-year-old girl helped her nine-year-old sister escape Monday night, and the nine-year-old ran to a nearby house for help. MacKenzie told the Tulsa World that when authorities arrived, they found an 11-year-old girl with so many stab wounds that emergency responders “couldn’t even count them.” The house was on fire, and Ahmad and the youngest girl were missing.

The middle child told police that their mother placed socks in their mouths, bound their hands with duct tape and began stabbing the eldest child, MacKenzie said.
The 11-year-old remained hospitalized Tuesday and police said she was unconscious and that her condition was “very severe.”

TULSA, Okla. — A Tulsa mother stabbed her eldest daughter 50 to 70 times, struck her head with a pickaxe then set their home on fire, before fleeing the scene with the youngest of her three daughters, according to police.
Taheerah Ahmad, 39, was arrested in downtown Tulsa Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities accuse her of attacking her 11-year-old daughter Monday night and fleeing with her 8-year-old daughter. The younger daughter, who authorities initially said was 7, was found safe with her mother.
Ahmad was being held Wednesday on complaints of arson, child abuse and assault and battery with the intent to kill. She was jailed without bond.
The 11-year-old girl remained in critical condition.
According to an arrest report, Ahmad told investigators she was upset with her children “because of the way they were reading and looking at her.” Police said Ahmad bound and gagged her three daughters, then attacked the eldest. Police have not said what the girls were reading.
The 8-year-old girl helped her 9-year-old sister escape, and the middle child ran to a neighbour for help, police said. When officers arrived, they found the 11-year-old girl in the burning home and Ahmad and the youngest child missing.
The arrest report said the eldest girl fought back while Ahmad was restraining her three daughters, which prompted Ahmad to stab her an estimated “50 to 70 times.” The report said Ahmad also struck the girl over the head several times with a pickaxe before setting the house on fire.

The 11-year-old had dozens of stab wounds to the torso along with puncture wounds to her legs, neck, hands and face, according to the report.
The report said Ahmad wanted to burn down the residence to “further ensure that (the 11-year-old) was dead.”
The report says investigators also interviewed Ahmad’s 9-year-old daughter, who said her mother had held her and her sisters hostage for a week prior to the attack and “forced them to stay in their rooms without food or water.”
The girl also said her mother threatened to stab the daughters if they attempted to leave their rooms and became very upset with the girls on the day of the attack, referring to at least one of them as “the devil,” according to the report.
Video from Tulsa television station KOTV that captures Ahmad’s arrest shows her youngest daughter, wearing a dress and a brightly colored hat, playing in their SUV as officers led Ahmad away in handcuffs.
Ahmad declined to comment to reporters later Tuesday as officers transported her to jail.
Tulsa Police Sgt. Shane Tuell said Ahmad may never have been arrested if two women hadn’t spotted Ahmad’s vehicle in downtown Tulsa. One of the women, Emily Wilson, told the Tulsa World that she and a friend decided to call the police after seeing the 8-year-old girl inside the vehicle.

OTTAWA — A Somalian man found guilty in the kidnapping of Amanda Lindhout has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Smith handed down the sentence for Ali Omar Ader today.
Smith ruled in December that Ader, a 40-year-old Somalian national, was a “willing participant” in the 2008 hostage-taking of Lindhout, who was working as a freelance journalist near Mogadishu at the time.
The judge found much of Ader’s testimony unbelievable and did not support his claim that he was forced into serving as a negotiator and translator on behalf of a gang which threatened to harm him and his family.
Lindhout, raised in Red Deer, Alta., and photographer Nigel Brennan of Australia were snatched by armed men while pursuing a story, the beginning of 15 months in captivity.
The RCMP lured Ader to Canada on the pretext of signing a lucrative book-publishing deal, leading to his arrest in Ottawa in June 2015.
Ader acknowledged to undercover officers that he had received $10,000 for his role in the kidnapping.
Samir Adam, one of Ader’s lawyers, said at a March sentencing hearing that 10 to 12 years in prison would be appropriate. The Crown was seeking a term of 15 to 18 years.
In sentencing Ader to 15 years, Smith said he would receive six years’ credit for time already spent in custody.
As negotiator for the gang, Ader held many long-distance telephone conversations with Lindhout’s mother, Lorinda Stewart, who told him the family was selling possessions and scrambling to raise ransom money.
At one point Lindhout was driven at night into the desert, where a knife was held to her throat. While Ader was not present, he helped the gang connect a phone call to Stewart so she could hear her daughter’s hysterical screams.
Delivering a prepared statement at the sentencing hearing, Lindhout said the confinement in squalid conditions left her with severe post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, the inability to sustain friendships, insomnia, nightmares, digestive problems and broken teeth.
“For years after my release I couldn’t really believe I was free.”
Brennan also read a victim impact statement, saying he, too, has suffered from post-traumatic stress, panic attacks and nightmares. Being forced to hear Lindhout’s screams from torture in an adjoining room is “a memory that will mentally stay with me for the rest of my life,” he said.
Ader expressed remorse at the March hearing, saying he was human and therefore flawed.
“I am sorry, I apologize and ask you for forgiveness,” he said, requesting freedom so he could care for his family in Somalia.

The RCMP lured Ader to Canada on the pretext of signing a lucrative book-publishing deal, leading to his arrest in Ottawa in June 2015.
Ader acknowledged to undercover officers that he had received $10,000 for his role in the kidnapping.
Samir Adam, one of Ader’s lawyers, said at a March sentencing hearing that 10 to 12 years in prison would be appropriate. The Crown was seeking a term of 15 to 18 years.
In sentencing Ader to 15 years, Smith said he would receive six years’ credit for time already spent in custody.
As negotiator for the gang, Ader held many long-distance telephone conversations with Lindhout’s mother, Lorinda Stewart, who told him the family was selling possessions and scrambling to raise ransom money.
At one point Lindhout was driven at night into the desert, where a knife was held to her throat. While Ader was not present, he helped the gang connect a phone call to Stewart so she could hear her daughter’s hysterical screams.
Delivering a prepared statement at the sentencing hearing, Lindhout said the confinement in squalid conditions left her with severe post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, the inability to sustain friendships, insomnia, nightmares, digestive problems and broken teeth.
“For years after my release I couldn’t really believe I was free.”
Brennan also read a victim impact statement, saying he, too, has suffered from post-traumatic stress, panic attacks and nightmares. Being forced to hear Lindhout’s screams from torture in an adjoining room is “a memory that will mentally stay with me for the rest of my life,” he said.
Ader expressed remorse at the March hearing, saying he was human and therefore flawed.
“I am sorry, I apologize and ask you for forgiveness,” he said, requesting freedom so he could care for his family in Somalia.

Noura Hussein, 19, was sentenced to death in Sunday for stabbing her husband to death after he raped her.
A teenaged girl facing the hangman’s noose for killing her husband after he raped her has broken her silence.
Noura Hussein, 19, has always maintained she killed her much older husband in self-defence.
The Sudanese woman had been forced to marry the man — her cousin — and refused to consummate the marriage. For nine days she refused to engage in sex with the man.
Enraged, he called his family to help him rape her and “teach her a lesson.”
“I said ‘no’, so his uncle dragged me by my arm into the bedroom and his cousin slapped me,” she told CNN.
“All of them tore at my clothing. His uncle held me down by my legs and each of the other two held down my arms. He stripped and had me while I wept and screamed.”
The following day, her 35-year-old husband again tried to force himself on Hussein.
“He threw me on the bed and tried to climb on top of me. I was fighting back and my hand found a knife under the pillow,” she said, adding that she stabbed the man to death.
Terrified, she ran to her family — who handed her over to police.
Hussein said she had been promised to the man when she was just 15 but he waited until she was done school to marry her. On the eve of the wedding, she contemplated killing herself.
Sudanese law allows children to be married from the age of 10. Marital rape is not a crime.
She is currently awaiting a retrial after appealing her death sentence last month.
Her case has gained international attention under the hashtag #JusticeForNoura.
