Pope Francis' address concerning baptism per reporter Carol Glatz:

Baptism contributes to rebirth.

Baptism (etymology):

"The English word baptize comes directly from the Greek verb transliterated baptiz? Likewise the noun baptism is from the Greek noun transliterated baptisma. Many believe that baptizo is properly translated 'immerse' or 'dip' as into water. "http://www.theopedia.com/Baptism

Baptism involves immersion.

Baptism (Bible):

"And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River... And this was his message: 'After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." (Mark 1:4-8 NIV)

John's immersion utilizes water and Jesus' immersion employs the Holy Spirit.

Baptism (Jesus):

“You don’t know what you are asking,' Jesus said. 'Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” (Mark 10:38 NIV) (See Matthew 26, Mark 14 and Luke 22 regarding Jesus' cup)

Jesus' personal immersion involves suffering and death.

Baptism (disciples):

"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20 NIV)

The disciples are to immerse believing others.

In what are Christ and Christians immersed? How does this immersion contribute to rebirth?

The soul (tiny christ spark of life) is immersed in a water and earth body, later it comes to remember it's origin and is reborn.

Some denominations, such as Baptists maintain that the eligible candidate for baptism must profess a faith or demonstrate a belief in the saving work of Jesus on the cross. Consequently, these groups are among those who hold to what is called a believer's baptism.

Luke writes of the birth of God's church in Acts chapter 2, and it is in this chapter where Peter preaches the saving power of the gospel message in the present tense for the first time. When those who might have had a hand in the death of Christ felt remorse for their actions, they cried out to Peter what must they do. Peter tells them to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). Luke records (in Acts 2:41) that those who received the message were baptized, an indication that belief was involved. The baptism of the Samaritans in Acts 8:12-13 also demonstrates this link between belief and baptism.

Those who practice infant baptism generally do accept that non-infants should only be baptized and admitted as members of the church if they express faith in Christ. Still didn't answer the question directly. I know what the Baptists believe and I know what some others believe. I have been told repeatedly that my baptism means nothing and for me to be "saved" I need to be baptized again. The same with all my kids. If we are not, then we will be going to hell along with all the other Catholics. Is this what YOU believe?

And why in hell would be do that? We learn from mistakes, trial and error, that's why we make them, life is school. I suppose we should be all born walking and talking perfectly. Do you want school to stop are you tired of learning don't you like growth. Disagreement is the spice and fire of life.

Methinks infant baptism represents the Holy Spirit's work in creating a spiritual rebirth in a person. The baby doesn't understand, didn't request, didn't choose. So it is the same for those that have been baptized with the Spirit.

I hope that my Master will lay hold of some of them and say, "You are mine, and you shall be mine. I claim you for myself." My hope arises from the freeness of grace, and not from the freedom of the will."

Grace comes to different people in different ways. Not everyone is the same and the spirit moves in mysterious ways. Nobody has a handle on the truth, Nobody knows the will of the Great Spirit, the Great Mystery. Anybody who thinks they do is delusional at best.

Right on Cliffy, one of the truest posts today! I get a kick out of these young whippersnappers in their three piece suits that come to the door with their Bible who are going to pass ME the WORD. Actually they don't know Sheep sh*t from dates! Of course there's a ring in their nose with a leash on it!
