I vaguely remember a story from church growing up that went something like....
"One day a man wanted to take his helicopter out. He woke up, and checked the weather report, and saw that it would be a terrible, stormy day. 'Ah well, if God didn't want me to go, he'd give me a sign.' He got to the helipad, and the people there discouraged him from taking his chopper out that day. 'Ah well, if God didn't want me to go, he'd give me a sign.' He went up, predictably ran into trouble, crashed, and died. He ended up in heaven, indignant and angry. 'Why didn't you give me a sign?' To which God pointed out he'd sent weather reports, and warnings from actual mouths, and still the man hadn't listened."
The overall point of the homily was that we are not meant to wait for divine signs, or bury our noses in religious texts. We ARE supposed to listen to the forecasts and society as well.
