NY Post cartoon of dead chimpanzee stirs outrage | National news | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

quote:

''A New York Post cartoon that some have interpreted as comparing President Barack Obama to a violent chimpanzee gunned down by police drew outrage Wednesday from civil rights leaders and elected officials who said it echoed racist stereotypes of blacks as monkeys.
The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers, one with a smoking gun, standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. The caption reads: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."
The cartoon refers to a chimpanzee named Travis who was killed Monday by police in Stamford, Conn., after it mauled a friend of its owner.
Some critics called the cartoon racist and said it trivialized a tragedy in which a woman was disfigured and a chimpanzee killed. Others said the cartoon suggests that Obama should be assassinated. Many urged a boycott of the Post and the companies that advertise in it.''

The hatred from the far right grows every day. Had anyone done that about Bush, the far right would have demanded an arrest under the USA Patriot Act.

That it's intent was racist isn't certain, it can be read in a way that it isn't intended, however, the cartoonist and paper definitely showed some poor judgement in printing it.

Not only is it racsist, but it's in extremely poor taste and the tie in with the chimp attack that left a person with their face torn off is just disgusting.

Why is it racist to compare Obama to a monkey but not Bush? The only people that would think it racist, obviously see some connection between monkeys and Barack's race. It's unfortunate that some people would make that connection.

You don't know that. There is some probability that it might be but it certainly isn't a given. That you want to think it is says more about your mindset than the cartoonists.

This is why North America is going to sh*t: people think probabilistic reasoning is certainty.

It doesn't follow with certainty that the cartoon is racist just because you think it is.

No kidding. I was thinking...

"Ok... Freedom of the Press... but wow! Why would they print this knowing what would happen?!"

Very VERY good point. As they say in here from time to time... you can't have it both ways.

What’s next? Fried chicken and watermelon, are those foods going to be on the terror watch list.

Are we all going to have to join the Baptist to be on the good side of Obama?

Is this the dream Martin Luther King Jr. had so many years ago?

I guess the honeymoon is over now the unpopular work will begin.
