Takes this pill and call me in the morning?

Some researchers at Oxford university have discovered that a pill might be able to treat somebody with racist and other prejudiced beliefs.

Propranolol, is an old drug of the beta-blocking class which has been used to treat a wide variety of illness and maladies, ranging from hypertension to migraines to shaky hands to glaucoma, and many many others. It's humourous to note that a pill for high blood pressure might also treat prejudice, lol. One of the physiological changes with the parmacodynamics of this drug is activation of a peripheral autonomic center in the brain associated with fear and emotional responses. Hmm, seems plausible. Racism and prejudice have often been describes as emotional and fearful responses.

The Oxford lead research (link to full study) used small groups, 18 subjects each for the propranolol and placebo groups. From one to two hours after administering the treatments, the subjects were asked to sort pictures of black and white faces into categories, including positive and negative words, as well as rate their feelings. This sort of test is known as an implicit association test (IAT). In another IAT, the subjects were asked to describe how they felt towards blacks, whites, homosexuals, Christians, and Muslims.

The results were 34% of the propranolol group received negative scores, while the placebo group had no subjects with a negative score. This indicates that propranolol may produce a negative bias (or an aversion) towards racism and prejudice at the sub-conscious level.

Lower blood pressure, less fear and anxiety, less prejudiced. Plausible? Perhaps :D

Touche, though it's not really a medical "treatment" if it kills the patient. Assisted suicide sure.

Only 34% of the treatment group, and it doesn't mean that someone can't have a negative opinion of something. Did you always feel as you do about Americans, or did it develop as you learned more?

Developed as I learned, still called a prejudice though. Racism can also be something that develops over time as one "learns" more.

Learning does not generally take place at the sub-conscious level which the IAT test works at. Though the sub-conscious mind isn't really a given, one of the weaknesses of this study, aside from the small sample size and criticisms of IAT tests.

No these racist and prejudicial feelings are not dysfunctions in the brain, they are usually
brought on by fear and ignorance. Feelings of superiority come from the feeling of
inferiority inside pills can't cure that.
There are other causes though like responses to the actions of others what is the saying
lay down with dogs wake up with flees
there are other causes though, in some cases people don't like others because they know
all too well what others are about.

Eh, everyone has prejudices. Prejudice is simply preconceived opinion guided by what stuff we've experienced or thought about. "Racism" or as I prefer to call it, is a different kettle of fish. That is intolerance and hatred (often irrationally) towards others.

Yes, well they used prejudice here because racism doesn't really apply to a similar disposition towards Christians and Muslims as it would for a white person who hates all black people, or a black person who hates all white people. :D

good point. I think most bigotry and "racism" could be dispelled by education. Ignorance breeds a lot of nasty stuff.

Absolutely, that's what I found plausible about the hypothesis, due to the part of the brain the drug acts upon. Fear from ignorance, a powerful emotional response.

Are we not a society that is always looking for a cure thru a pill. Everything from weight to now ??? prejudice.

This sorry excuse for a study is a prime example of wasting taxpayers money.

A lead pill works wonders. No documented side effects either.

If delivered at the proper velocity...lol

Anybody that proposes a regimen of treatment with this drug for racism ought to be dragged out into a public street and have the above mentioned lead pill administered behind the ear.

In that context it is a slide downwards to con tolling populations that do not fit into what society calls or defines as normal.

Prejudice is in my opinion not genetic, though it may be. Case being they are now looking for what they call the kindness gene.
But I would say even if it was shown to be then education and social pressure is the answer, not drugs.
