At St James's Palace the Clerk of the Council has read the Accession Proclamation, which declared King Charles III the new monarch, Head of the Commonwealth, and Defender of the Faith.

This took place before the Accession of the new King was publicly Proclaimed on the balcony.

The Accession Council, a meeting of Privy Counsellors and Great Officers of State, only meets on the death of a monarch to proclaim the new King or Queen.

King Charles returns to Buckingham Palace

The new King has just returned to Buckingham Palace following that meeting of the Accession Council at St James's Palace.

There were loud cheers from the crowds gathered there as the sovereign's vehicle, flying the royal standard, drove through the gates.

Family view floral tributes at Balmoral Castle gates

The Queen's three younger children, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, and Anne and Edward's spouses are among the family members who are viewing the floral tributes.

Her Majesty's four granddaughters Zara Tindall, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and Lady Louise Windsor, plus her eldest grandson Peter Phillips, are also there.

Some family members appear emotional as they read what people have written about the Queen.

Princess Eugenie is seen laying a bunch of flowers with the rest of the tributes.

When my mom died 2 years ago, I was with my family and liked it that way. To grieve and be thrust into the public eye where your every move is monitored must be a nightmare for him.

My mom passed just this previous Christmas Eve.

I hope people remember grieving is personal and if someone doesn't show anything, it doesn't mean they aren't grieving any less than those who cry or even wail at the death of someone they love.

Even though he's had 70 years preparing to be King, you could tell the stress he's under when he furiously motioned for an aide to move an ink pot that was in his way when he was signing the Proclamation at St James's Palace this morning...

Tories to announce new leader with 'revised program' reflecting Queen's death

OTTAWA — The Conservative party says the event announcing its next leader that is scheduled for Saturday will go ahead as planned, but in a more muted way.

The Queen’s death on Thursday prompted the party to rethink the event, since it will fall within an official mourning period.

After learning of her death, the chair of the Tories’ leadership election organizing committee said it would look for ways to announce the results in a respectful manner.

In a brief statement early Friday, committee chair Ian Brodie confirmed the event in Ottawa will go ahead on Saturday, but “with a revised program” that reflects the situation.

“We considered all options,” party president Rob Batherson said in an interview later Friday afternoon.

“One of the things that certainly inspired the party in our decision-making is Her Majesty was someone who was resolute, resilient and proceeded through some very challenging times,” he said. “We’re letting the example of her life, example of her service, guide us.”

The party is now planning to open Saturday’s event with a tribute to the Queen, and it axed elements that would create a festive atmosphere, such as confetti guns.

Batherson added that speeches will also strike a more somber tone, and campaigns have been informed about the event’s change in tenor.

“The campaigns are aware of the direction that we’re going in and so, ultimately, we’re all grown-ups here,” he said.

The party had been selling tickets to the event for $150, with members arriving Friday from across the country. More than 1,000 people are expected to be on site.

The party’s interim leader Candice Bergen, ho recently announced that she doesn’t plan to run in the next federal election, will address the crowd.

There will also be video greetings from Erin O’Toole, the Ontario MP and former leader who was voted out of his job by the majority of his caucus in February, triggering the current leadership contest.

Former Conservative cabinet minister Peter MacKay, who ran for leader in the contest that elected O’Toole, is being hosted as the event’s special guest.

Batherson says all of the speakers have a connection to the Queen and the Royal Family.

He says MacKay hosted the Queen when he was a minister, and Bergen met the new monarch, King Charles III, during his visit to Canada this past summer. He also pointed to O’Toole’s time in the Canadian military, which has strong ties to the British monarchy.

The upcoming gathering of Conservative faithful caps off a seven-month leadership contest between five candidates vying to replace him.

Members of Parliament Pierre Poilievre, Leslyn Lewis and Scott Aitchison are running, as are former Quebec premier Jean Charest and Roman Baber, a former Ontario legislator who was removed from Premier Doug Ford’s caucus over his opposition to COVID-19 lockdowns.

Many in the party see the race as a competition between Poilievre and Charest, although an expectation that Poilievre is likely to take the prize has grown throughout the summer.

That is based on reports from Poilievre’s campaign that it sold more than 300,000 memberships, and the MP’s consistent ability to draw crowds by the hundreds — and, at times, by the thousands, which is rare in party leadership contests.

Still, Charest’s campaign has said it has enough support in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada to give Charest a narrow path to victory, according to the point system that will be used to determine the outcome.

The party has begun the first stage of the ballot-counting process by inputting voter cards ahead of Saturday’s event. More than 400,000 party members cast a ballot out of some 678,7000 eligible members, which is a record-setting figure.

I wasn't suggesting he was grieving 'incorrectly' just that it must be extremely hard on him on a human level. He doesn't have the option of wailing and crying even if that is what would make him feel better.

Queen's funeral to be held on Monday 19 September

Queen Elizabeth II's funeral will be held on Monday 19 September at Westminster Abbey in London, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

Queen to lie in state for four days

The Queen will lay in state for four days before her funeral on 19 September, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

She will be taken from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall on Wednesday, where the coffin will be rested on a raised platform, known as a catafalque.

Her coffin will be draped in the Royal Standard flag and once in Westminster Hall it will be topped with the Imperial State Crown, orb and sceptre.

Members of the public will then be able to file past and pay their respects.

The grand hall is the oldest part of the Palace of Westminster, at the heart of the British government.

The last member of the Royal Family to lie in state in the hall was the Queen Mother in 2002, when more than 200,000 people queued to view her coffin.

Princess Anne to bring mother to London

Princess Anne will accompany Queen Elizabeth II's coffin to London ahead of the funeral, Buckingham Palace says.

The monarch died peacefully on Thursday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

Buckingham Palace said the coffin would depart for Edinburgh airport on Tuesday and then be flown to London by RAF Northolt, with the Queen's only daughter on board.

The coffin is expected to arrive at Buckingham Palace at 20:00 GMT on Tuesday, where King Charles III and Queen Camilla will witness its arrival.

Bank holiday to mark funeral

The UK will have a bank holiday on Monday 19 September for Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

The bank holiday in honour of Britain's longest-reigning monarch was approved earlier today by King Charles III.

It marks the final stage of a period of national mourning.

Cher calls Queen a cow instead of GOAT in emoji gaffe

If Cher could, she would turn back time and rewrite a tribute tweet to the late Queen Elizabeth.

The sentiment was there but the 76-year-old singer-actress likely wishes she had her handy readers or was able to test Twitter’s edit button so she could quickly fix the emoji she picked to honour the late monarch.

“Am sad about the passing of Queen Elizabeth II,” she wrote. “I had (the) honour of meeting her. I was in (a) long line of people waiting to meet her.”

Cher continued: “Yet when she got to me, she asked me pertinent questions and seemed genuinely interested in talking to me.”

She ended the tweet with, “I’m proud she was a (bull emoj)] and happy she had a great sense of humour.”

Twitter had a minor meltdown over Cher’s emoji choice, wondering if she meant to use it or if she was referring to the Queen as a cow… or full of bull… or bull-headed.

However, most people believe Cher meant to grab the goat emoji, which admittedly does have the same colouring to the bull, and hope it was a blunder while describing the Queen as the “greatest of all time.”

One person wrote, “Cher casually calling (the Queen) a COW instead of a GOAT… There are tears in my eyes I CAN’T.”

Another asked, “What does the cow/bull symbol mean in this statement?”

A third person summed it up nicely: “It wouldn’t be a Cher tweet if there weren’t some small detail that made you go, ‘Huh?’”

Cher first met the Queen at the premiere of Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun in 1988.

The Oscar winner also sang at the 2001 Royal Variety Performance.

She has yet to respond to the emoji gaffe… or explain why she chose the bull.

Queen's final journey to end in sombre grandeur

Sean Coughlan

BBC News, royal correspondent

The Queen’s final journey will begin tomorrow with her oak coffin being carried by her Balmoral gamekeepers, her own staff bringing her to a hearse that will take her to Edinburgh.

That journey, beginning in simplicity, will end with the sombre grandeur of a state funeral in Westminster Abbey.

It will be the first state funeral that many of us will have seen, with the last being Sir Winston Churchill in 1965.

The public will be able to pay their own respects when the Queen’s coffin will be in St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh, and then over four full days in Westminster Hall in London.

King Charles will also have to carry out a series of engagements - as well as taking part in the mourning for his mother in Scotland, he will also go to meet political and civic leaders in Northern Ireland and Wales.

After the first phase of mourning, the planning for the funeral is now moving into place.

King Charles III to embark on tour of nations before funeral

In the days before his mother's funeral, King Charles III and his wife, Queen Camilla, will travel to Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

The first stop will be Scotland, where they will visit the Scottish parliament and join a vigil in memory of the monarch.

On Tuesday, the royal couple will travel by air to Belfast and visit Hillsborough Castle, where they will view an exhibition on the Queen's long association with Northern Ireland.

They will also attend a service in memory of the Queen and receive a message of condolence led by the speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

After returning to London, where they will witness the arrival of Queen Elizabeth II's coffin, the couple will travel to Wales on Friday.

Gouls already flogging Queen Elizabeth merch on eBay

Tea cups, stamps, fridge magnets, salt and pepper collections featuring Corgis: the gouls wasted no time before flogging Queen Elizabeth II items on eBay.

British newspapers from Friday, Sept. 9 with the Queen on the cover — announcing her death — are already being sold online, some listed at $50. (U.S.)

Candy and cookie tins, china figurines, a Platinum Jubilee Barbie Doll, key chains, stuffed animals, vintage magazines, lapel pins, buttons and every conceivable item with some connection to the monarch is up for sale on eBay now.

According to the New York Post, several unusual items are also listed.

There are two wax figurines of the Queen up for sale, for example, both priced at just under $16,000.

At least one of them started life as a movie prop, apparently.

Both are being sold by the same person, who claims each figure has real human hair, resin eyeballs and teeth created from dental veneer templates.

For $12,000 you could buy an old teabag allegedly used for a cuppa by the Queen herself in the late ’90s.

It’s an interesting grift, but only to someone who doesn’t understand that tea is a sacrament to the British and Queen Elizabeth would have had bespoke teas.

And would the queen have used a tea bag? Inquiring minds want to know.

A pseudo certificate of ersatz authenticity goes along with the teabag.

The teabag was supposedly smuggled out of Windsor Castle by an exterminator who was there to rid the place of roaches in 1998.

As of Friday the collector’s item teabag has been removed from sale.

Not all the items are tawdry.

There’s a 1953 Queen Elizabeth sheet of stamps from Singapore ($39,888) up for grabs.

A handsome artist’s wood box with sterling silver fittings — created for the Queen’s 1977 Silver Jubilee — is for sale for $51,700.

As for provenance and pricing: caveat emptor.

What happens next, ahead of Queen's funeral

We've mentioned that the Queen's coffin is currently in Balmoral, but it will soon embark on its journey to the nation's capital, ahead of her state funeral on Monday 19 September.

During this period of national mourning, people will be given the chance to pay their respects to the Queen, as she will lie in state in Edinburgh before travelling to London.

Tomorrow, her coffin will depart Balmoral, proceeding slowly on the six-hour journey to Edinburgh.
