I thought everything was free in the states the way some on here have described it.

Only if you are rich.

At a minimum, the hospital would destroy her credit rating. They'd likely put debt collecters on her. If they sold the debt, she could get sued and lose everything. Wouldn't be the first time by a long road.

You are asuming she has any assets. Or a worthy credit rating. She can always declare bankruptcy. Which in Canada means the collectors will get sh it.

She's not a US Citizen, she's Canadian.

HUH yeah, I read this incorrectly. Was thinking N.C.

Greenwood Subdivision - Charlotte, North Carolina

Kenzie Markey, 32, lives in Pemberton, B.C., but is originally from Greenwood, N.S. She has skydived more than a hundred times in the past three years. During a recent trip with friends to Arizona, she made 20 jumps in less than a week.

She's a US Citizen just move her to a State funded hospital.. they are free

50 Largest Public Hospitals in America

Just like Canada they don't refuse you and you don't pay..

Locally here JPS is the hospital that people go to who do not have insurance.

John Peter Smith Hospital - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
See, unlike Canada...it's all free!!!!

Baffles me how all these people don't have health care when it's all free.

Must be more to it huh?

I'd say, yup.

Stubbed toes and sniffles are full on traumas the require instant access to the best stubbed toes specialists in the western world.

In the United States you have what they call co-pays..

On my Insurance it's $20 for a doctor, $50 for urgent care and $100 for Emergency..

When I go to my doctor "The Neighborhood Doctor" I have never waited for more than 15 minutes before called in.

....Emergency wait times are advertised on electronic billboards 28 min..

https://projects.propublica.org/emergency/

( Just type in Arlington, Texas is search field) When was the last time you waited under 30 min at the Emergency. LOL

I think Canada need to adopt the co-pay system to stop abuse of the medical system.. and would also help a struggling Health Care System by adding more cash to it and reducing abuse.

She's a Nova Scotia woman. i.e. From Nova Scotia, Canada.

Once she's across the border, the US health care debt collectors can go pound salt.

She needs a kick in the butt for not being insured to the hilt, but, I'd be damned if I'd pay 500K.............declare bankruptcy if necessary. Millions in the US are. Join the idiots.

No, I'm not. All those things are not dependent on her level of assets.

Interesting but she made twenty jumps in less than a week. That suggests that somebody with an airplane gave her a ride up to ten thousand feet or whatever altitude she was jumping from twenty times. Who paid for that? Was she packing her own chute? That might help to explain her accident.

Now, now, Lol.

You know, if a foreign visitor to Canada had the same accident here, our hospitals would send them a bill too.

But would the bill be $500,000.00? Sounds a bit crazy to me.

So you're saying screw the very people who SAVED YOUR LIFE!! Next time a Canadian gets injured and has no insurance, I guess they should just leave them outside the hospital door to die..

Well, for one thing, care doesn't get rationed like it does over in the UK. People don't die in waiting rooms waiting for treatment, like how it happens in Canada. And, we have about 100 times as many medications as you do, as the "list" that's covered over there, is very limited.

So if you get injured, you go to the hospital, they patch you up, and send you a bill. It doesn't matter if you are an adult or child, OR, legal or illegal.

What happens if *I* come over to visit in the UK? Do *I* get free treatment in your hospital? I don't think so! I think I'd get turned away! We don't do that, here in the USA.

Here in the USA, we have government run health insurance. 25% of Americans have it, including a healthy chunk of our children, and MOST of our elderly. WE also have several childrens' hospitals for special treatment, that are absolutely free, even if you DO have insurance.

Ironically, the USA has the HIGHEST cancer survival rate in the world, and the UK, has one of the LOWEST cancer survival rates, according to the UK Telegraph. So . .. that child is more likely to be "left to die" in the UK, than the USA, due to rationing of care, or "death panels", if you like.

So, you're watching too many Michael Moore movies. What you need to pay attention to, is where the heads of state go, from around the world, when they want medical treatment. To the UK? I don't think so. They all come here, to the USA

This raises another issue everyone should be covered according to the conditions
spelled out in the policy. The problem is most people don't give a second thought
to high risk activities skydiving being one, stock car racing for ammeters and so on.
Then again is airline travel a high risk? What is in and what is out and who should
pay?
If we went through that exercise each policy would weigh forty pounds in paper and
we'd pay more for the printed copy than for the premium when the authorities got done.
Any thoughts on what is high risk?

Don't pay a dime

When I go to my doctor "The Neighborhood Doctor" I have never waited for more than 15 minutes before called in.

Same with me, then again, I only go in when I need to. Not for every little bruise and sniffle.

Pretty much every time I've gone into the emergency.

It would also prevent those at the lower end of the income scale using their doctor, urgent care, or emerg.

One time when I was in the Langley, BC hospital, 2 US Citizens came in to get assistance.. one was diabetic and needed help.

The hospital refused to see him and told him to eat some candy so he can get across the border..

--------------------------

I left Alberta 6 months ago, before I left the Province was making an appointment for removal of a lump in my lower side... could be cancer..

6 months later I'm still waiting for that appointment..

Meanwhile, it's already been removed at the Arlington Memorial Hospital, waited 2 weeks and it was benign.

Maybe because all he/she needed was to eat some candy to bring their levels back up.

WE do have a co pay system of sorts. Problem is this is a provincial matter so it varies from province to province. In BC those that pay for their own medical pay around $120/mo. for two. Also pay a fee for ambulance service. Important things like Naturopaths are not included in medical coverage.
