Yep, on paper, but regardless, it's the annual salary that is important, if they have any budgeting skills at all it doesn't matter whether they get 10 cheques or 12 or 2 for that matter!
They can choose having it averaged over 12 month or 10 but still only get paid for 189 days.

Do geologists make too much money or not enough?
I had a couple offers recently and need some help deciding.

What would you ask for a day's work?

12hrs shifts, 2 week rotations of 2 on1 off and it's camp.

I suppose in this day and age a guy with a degree would hope to earn about $400 a day for a 12 hour shift.

I don't think anyone can be forced to complete an education program. Just like no one can be forced to fulfill a personal services contract.

Didn't Archimedes predate the Romans?-:)

Sure he did. Most likely his studies were compiled at the Great Library. I have read accounts of Egyptian scholarship and know that they would at times kidnap (yes, kidnap!) scholars, take their writings, duplicate them completely, and then give their victims a big dinner before releasing them back to their native homes. It was said they did not harm or intend to harm them - the Egyptians genuinely only wanted to accumulate the scholarships for their libraries and for the education of their own scholars.

But as for the Romans - ugh.
