There is another risk that had Harper given these 3 the bums-rush that he'd be accused of denying justice or possibly covering up something by not allowing full discussion on the event(s).

Considering the importance that the media has applied to what amounts to 3-4 hundred thousand in expenses (that are being repaid I might add) is so grossly disproportionate to other recent and notable scandals.. That in itself stinks
That is not the main point- The Senate does not have clear, concise and firm rules- residency for appointment is one- suspension is another that needs to be expanded- using public funds for partisan activities is another- these rules are convoluted.
That is what riles the average Canadian.

Not the main point?... Harper followed protocol and in the end, he is scrutinized by the yet-to-be-proven allegations of Duffy that doesn't have the balls, let alone proof, to make his statements outside Parliament where he would be held accountable.

To add to this, you have a media presence (dominated by one publicly funded broadcaster that shall remain nameless) that has already tried and convicted Harper, while working to support Duffy in his martyrdom.

In order to change the above; I believe you'd need the Senate's approval... So, fair to say, it ain't gonna happen

That is what riles the average Canadian.

Says who?.. The CBC?

Well, let me bring you up to speed.

Q: How can you tell when a politician is lying?

A: Their lips are moving

That's the short version of my answer.

You can use this clever research tool (Google) to educate yourself on the individual lies, scandals and subversive acts of any and all of Canada's PMs, including the Sponsorship Scandal (aka Adscam)... It's pretty heinous - not just a few hundred thousand in fraudulent expenses and a gvt cover-up... No, no.. This was in the hundreds of millions (that we know of) with full knowledge of the PM, PMO and senior Ministers... Regardless, you can read all about it (and many more from years gone by) at your leisure

Now, apparently you are under the impression that things today are any different than any time in the past. With this in mind, it is with great sadness that I must inform you that Harper is simply 'business as usual'.... That said, I do not subscribe to what you refer to as 'a continued assertion' that the PCs get a free pass - rather, my message is that the system needs full reform, and not just when the party in power is one that you do not support.

As far as the notion having 'some bloody standards for how Government should operate', that sentiment also applies to the analysis and assessment of blame on an equal basis to all individuals, regardless of political stripe that contravene the law and the best interests of Canadians.

Lastly, again, it is with great sadness that I be the one to inform you that in all likelihood, Harper will emerge from this circumstance with little or no damage. No different than Chretin with Adscam or Mulroney with the Schreiber Affair.
Good comments and sadly too true .I must admit though I cannot put this scandal and Harper in the same class as Mulrooney or Cretin .

I can agree on this, but how is it reasonable that the entire tradition of a dysfunctional Senate should fall at the feet of Harper?

What happened with Duffy, Wallin, Brazeau and Harb is NOT the fault of the individual that appointed them... This is the fault of the individual Senator that bilked the system.

Sure, there are many that 'demand accountability' from the leader that appointed the person, but if you like (as may likely happen), we can audit as far back as the records go.. If that happens, will you be front and center to 'demand' that those appointed by the last sitting PMs (assuming there are irregularities) that Chretin, Mulroney or Martin be dragged into Court and punished for appointing those folks?

If you are prepared to hold Harper's feet to the fire on this, the same legal standard needs to be applied to ALL former PMs wherein Senatorial indiscretion is established.

I am not and have not been holding his feet legally to this. He had an opportunity- a golden one to address the issue- make changes and he would not have the problems he is facing today.
A major tactical error on his part- And that is the surprising part.

Prime Minister Harper exercised very poor judgement in appointing these scoundrels. He had an obligation to the Canadian public to ascertain there suitability for service to her Majesty. What trouble can we expect from future appointments by this Prime Minister? I have no confidence in our government now. It's frightening to think that he may appoint a judge or a general. I will vote for Trudeau cuz he smokes cannabis. I don't trust abstainers.

Goobs.. Harper DID take the appropriate actions as dictated by the rules/regulations already in place.

The opportunity you mention (that I would have little problem with, by the way) would render another problem for the PM in that he didn't allow due process.

Considering all of the flack (much of it undeserved in my opinion) he has gotten by following the rules, can you imagine the sh*t storm he'd be in if he went renegade?

He's washed up Goober, you know it I know it and the Canadian voter knows it. He resorted to lies, they are a matter of record, he got caught, his handlers will dump him for one of the other suits. I think the unfolding great depression and world war III and the international banking community will demand a fresh approach. I think his domestic problems have overtaken his resolve.

I didn't realize that the investigation was complete and the findings were published.

A miracle really that Duffy never went public (ie: outside of Parliamentary Privilege).. He really strikes me as a showman and I would have expected him to make those factual comments to the print media and various television stations

We heard what we heard, he was fired no he resigned, he resigned no he was fired, the PM knew nothing about anything while he was steering the ship. Was the PM really kept uninformed about such important matters? The whole thing stinks of mutiny and incompetence at command levels. A quick resignation could save the parties bacon before it burns and leave some time and distance before the next election. Why do ordinary hard working conservations have to suffer? Just pick another leader out of the box, how about that Baird fellow our the Mackay the Blade. Of course I don't care one way or the other, my interest is purely in the theater. I love watching the useless bastards hack and claw each other to preserve their feeding order.

Mercer isn't the only Canadian who has been left disappointed by question period since the return of Parliament.

Last week, Tory MP Paul Calandra, the new parliamentary secretary to the prime minister, gave an answer that probably was worthy of Mercer's buzzer.

Calandra was asked by NDP MP Charlie Angus how many lawyers from the Prime Minister's Office were involved in setting up the secret deal with Senator Mike Duffy.

But instead of addressing that query, Calandra decided to express just how happy he is to be a Tory.

"Thank goodness Canadians elected a strong, stable, national Conservative majority government, led by the best prime minister in the world, flanked by a minister of finance who has won awards, with the strongest cabinet in Canadian history and Conservative members of Parliament working all over the country to hope for hope, jobs and economic prosperity," he said.

National Post columnist Andrew Coyne called it the "most complete non-answer" in the history of question period.

The following video is self-explanatory, but if you would like to read more about it and the Harper clan's seemingly endless capacity to not answer questions, check out this link

No matter which way you spin this it all comes out spelled the same way "excuses, excuses, excuses". Which, yes, is par for the course with a politician. And I'm tired of it.

Has this "web of deceit and lies" been anything new? No, it hasn't. But that doesn't mean we should ignore it. Neither should we be ignoring that this happens, in some way, shape or form, over and over again. In my world, when you get the top job you also assume all the responsibilities too. (and it should be like that in everybody's world). So once, just once, I'd like to see a PM acknowledge to us that this is taken seriously and that on our behalf he's going to do everything within the power of his office to represent our interest. Booting them out of the party means squat to me, throwing up your hands and shrugging your shoulders saying "I had no idea" when the person in the top position in your office is making backroom deals is simply unacceptable.

We have an opportunity to stand up and say, "We are fed up with all of this. You work for us. Do your damn job and stop passing the buck around." Put an end to this b. s. once and for all. Will it happen? Not likely. But that's what I want.

That could very well be. But we have a new budget coming in 14- And that can incorporate a raft of changes to the Commons and Senate. Now if Harper does that he will walk high in public opinion.
We have watched and seen misuse of hard earned tax dollars and this Govt will not tolerate it...................
That is when the next election begins.
