Pierre Trudeau inherited a strong, growing and diversified Canadian economy.
When Trudeau at last left office for good in 1984, Canadians were still feeling the effects of Canada’s worst recession since the Great Depression. Eight years later, the country would tumble into another and even worse recession.
The two recessions 1981-82 and 1992-93 can both fairly be laid at Trudeau’s door.

So does Frum figure Trudeau caused the American economy to go into recession as well in 1981? Anybody so simple minded as to blame one individual for economic cycles really has no business involving themselves in such a debate. Though I'm not really surprised Colpy, you really should be embarrassed for getting sucked in by such silly arguments. Sorry to spoil your party but Trudeau was no more responsible for the 81 recession than Bush was responsible for this one. Obviously, you don't understand the complexities of the Canadian economy (probably why you are quoting Frum)

Trudeau had his strong points and his weak points. The one thing I could never figure out was what women saw in him.

He was one of the fugliest Canadians ever. Next to Geddy Lee the fugliest.

Geddy is the one on the right :)

Yeah, definitely as homely as a mud fence.

Stop making me want to vomit.

My family moved up here from the states and it wasn't until Trudeau that things go half sensible.

Did you think those kids got the idea all by themselves?

You guys are acting like if you were in charge you would be tyrants, for it is in your mind to pick upon in a neanderthal way anything you can find to pick upon another.

That means you have never worked with a woman loving you:

That means you think you can keep the planet alive by yourself.

I understand.

I have a petri dish I love so much I masurbate upon it knowing it loves me back.

Kowing how to keep it warm in an oven...

Some of the worst tyrants and dictators were not of the land they ruled.

Alexander the Great was not Greek, he was Macedonian.
Napoleon was not French, he was Corsican.
Stalin was not Russian, he was Georgian.
Hitler was not German, he was Austrian.

Trudeau was not Canadian, he was a Quebecer.

We appear to be at a crossroads.

Give the Conservatives a majority, and we will go a long way towards solving the problem by democratic reform (seat adjustments....increases in the west and Ontario) and by rendering the BQ irrelevant.

Anything less than that, and there is a very good chance the Liberals and NDP will elevate the BQ to government, enshrining their status as the best choice for Quebecers, and they will further devolve the Canadian federation into a unit mostly concerned with kissing Quebecois arse, and hand over enough jurisdiction to the PQ that separation, when it inevitably comes, will be a simple matter of changing a sign or two on the highway..........

Damn, I love elections... :)

I do well as a partisan, never been able to walk away from a good fight.

As long as people buy trash from David Frum I suppose he'll have a job.

Hide the children. Nuff said
Yeah - the beady eyes don't help either. I'm sure cowboy wannabe doesn't even have a reflection.

Yep -- the only reason he's where he or Linda even have an audience is because of momma's coattails. Funny how's been in the US

... been in the US for years and no one questions his 'Canadianness' ....

He wrote a really interesting article in Esquire magazine, the 'State of the Union' address that Obama should have given. It was such a reasonable piece, I had to double check that Frum had written it. I guess he does have some of his mother's blood in him.

Mostly, of course, he writes the tripe that he's been paid to write - you know, that right wing stuff that people believe when they're 22.

I thought it was fitting that when the post office released the Trudeau postage stamp it was a gummed back so everyone could kiss his arse one last time

Speaking of necro bumps...

Remember how you were saying, just around this time, that Canada was swinging 'right' and that it would be a long term trend?

Boy was that hilarious.
