Northern Ontario,
You would be surprised, but some people from Toronto who enjoy winter sports like snowmobiling sell their house when they retire and move around here where a comparable house can be had for one fifth the price of a house in T.O
I know of a few (not personally) that have done it!

Do you have plans to retire into the Siberian Interior to escape the the moderate climate and easy living? If not would it be for similar reasons to why 90%+ of the Canadian population lives south of the 51st parallel do ya' figure? People that where born in Canada south of the 51st parallel that still live south of the 51st parallel had ancestors that made that decision for them would be my guess.

If I remember correctly (bearing in mind this is an old statistic from years ago), over 90% of Canada's population lives within 100 kilometres of the US border.

That happens a lot to us too. They sell their house in some city and "retire" here pushing up house prices so people born here Can no longer afford a house. The worst part is they start demanding we change the way we live to suit what they consider a country lifestyle somewhere between Green Acres and Andy of Mayberry) With all the ammenities they had in the city of course.

I know China has a hukou system that allows a person to live and work only within the municipality specified in the hukou (an ID card that identified his authorized municipality. I personally favour free movement of people within the country myself.

I live here because I can find employment, here. My ancestors settled in Upper Canada as refugees from four different persecutions and they also settled in Saskatchewan because it was the land of opportunity.
This part of the country was settled in the manner that it was because of the quality of agriculture here where we have good loamy soils and are in the same climate zone as that of North Carolina. The Great Lakes have had a huge influence on settlement patterns. If the Great Lakes were in the middle of Asia, there would be a billion plus people clustered around them.
A lake ain't coastline. Shoreline maybe.

Free movement is best but the housing values have been skewed by rich retirees from elsewhere driving up realestate and driving down wages. We also get a lot of welfare bums from back east come out here because the weather is mostly good and welfare easy to get.

So are you proposing rent ceilings and increasing the minimum wage? Rent ceilings in Toronto have led to supply stagnating for years while demand continued to grow. A friend of mine told me how when he was about to post an ad on Kijiji to rent out his basement a few years back, he didn't need to since potential renters themselves were posting their own ads trying to outbid one another. So I ask again, do you really want to go the way of rent ceilings?

And as for the minimum wage, do you really want to legislate unskilled workers onto welfare?

You seem to be complaining about the natural ups and downs of a free market. What exactly are you trying to get at?

No and No.
What I would like to do is stop these outsiders from infesting my island.

So you favour a Chinese-style hukou system them? You keep telling me you want to stop them, but you refuse to say how. Do you expect a magic fairy to stop it for you?

I suppose one solution would be for you to buy the island, no, or do you expect the state to fix that for you?

I'd be happy if the various governments would stop encouraging them.

Yeah immigration and the racism of the "newcomers" is driving everybody out.

Wait a minute. Taxslave mentioned nothing about racism. He was talking about their purchasing power pricing everyone else out of the market. That's just the free market doing its work.
