The General Public has paid a lot of hard coin for the scientific facts that exist today and it appears all the facts came from a few people sitting around in chairs doing nothing but talking, 'poof' there are all the 'stinkin facts' you need.

On with the 'reasonable' POV.

When sea-ice forms the salt is not included so when the ice melts it is fresh water and because ice is lighter than water it drop as it melts and that pushes the fresh water out into the area to the east of Greenland. the bigger the change in a year the more fresh water that is pushed out. That also happens to be where the warm water from the GOM would be able to melt the ice from above rather than from below.

Shallow draft vessels have taken some big tech leaps in the past decades. It's not more open water, but more accessibly capable ships sailing the Arctic.

Last winter was harsh with thicker more far reach sea ice than the past several winters.

Even in an age where we can fly to the moon oceans contain uncharted rocks-if this vessel had forward looking sonar then maybe this could have been prevented but that technology is rare outside military craft.

Most seine boats have sonar . Not uncommon.

Tell us about sonar, taxslave. Most 14ft aluminum fishing boats have sonar but I defy you to find ice with it. You had better bone up on sonars before you blather on like that.

"Not uncommon"

Yeah, right.

Sonar will tell you where bottom is though ( you have two hands, so you should be able to find your own without it) which is what the ship in the OP ran into.
;)
That's what "grounded" means.

Sonar tells you where the bottom is but it might not tell you where rocks and shelves are or ice unless it's side-looking sonar. You can go aground on those, too Horatio.

They would have been trying to get into one of the inlets. Good reason to require they travel in pairs. Tug-boats are pretty sturdy, can they be beefed up so ice-breakers can be a private industry as well.

Det-cord laid out using a harpoon-gun from the old days when you want to create a crack a few 100yds long.

FICE-100

Furuno FICE-100 iceradar allows the navigator in detail to observe ice conditions, and thus find the optimal route through icy waters.

Using advanced algorithms, FICE-100 forms a detailed picture of the surrounding ice up to a distance of 4 nautical miles.

FICE-100 will be able to use the signal from an existing X-band radar, and will act as an independent stand-alone installation that is incredibly simple to use.

The advanced algorithms mean that the navigator can see old tracks from icebreakers and other ships, enabling significant savings in fuel and time.

Furuno FICE-100 is easily connected with the popular FAR-2xx7 Radar via Ethernet, whereby the installation can be easily done by the ship’s own crew. No extra scanners are required nor any wires need to be installed in the masts.

We recommend external connection of bearing, position and speed to gain full use of the FICE-100 system.

The Prairie climate and geology experts are also experts at sonar technologies.

Here is a Phillipine warship that ran around on a shoal in the South China Sea. (An un-charted shoal? In waters navigated for thousands of years? Not like the "totally charted" Canadian Arctic?)

Lest you think that the Philipinos are stupid or incompetent, the Chinese navy did the same thing on the same shoal a few years back. Why aren't their sonars finding those shoals? Why aren't their prairie mudhole fishfinders turned on, like the experts on here do?

Yeah, right.
Do you know what a Seine boat is? Quick hint_ They cost well over a million dollars to build. And their sidscan sonar is good enough to find an anchol in 25 fathoms of water.

They also have this really neat device called a depth sounder. Tells you when there is more land than water under the keel. The only catch is that someone has to be in the wheel house to observe the instriments.

A quick Google search of the phrase "unprecedented sea ice" is a howl to those who haven't been brainwashed.

I'll bet that your role as first mate on the SS Minnow provided you with a keen understanding of the technology and issues therein.

... Thanks for all your insights Gilligan
