Citizenship revocation

Trudeau has said he’d repeal the aspects of C-24 that allow the government to unilaterally revoke the citizenship of Canadians convicted of terrorism.

This is more than a theoretical legislative issue: Multiple people are fighting citizenship revocations in court. Will a new Trudeau cabinet immediately end plans to revoke their citizenship, and reverse the revocation of one man’s citizenship? Will a new justice minister unilaterally repeal all or part of the law? We don’t know.

“Theoretically, in any ongoing legal challenge to the law, the government could make the decision it’s not going to contest that. And we might see a court then make summary judgment that the law is invalid,” Macfarlane said.
“I’m not sure there’s a lot of precedent for that. And I think it’s preferable to see Parliament actually amend the law rather than just having the Attorney General lie down on a legal challenge like that.”

Parliament postponed: What Canada’s new Liberal government could – and couldn’t – tackle without oversight - National | Globalnews.ca

I'm sorry but this is just so wrong. Why would we want terrorists to keep their Canadian citizenship?

Many Canadians in prison for similar anti human crimes are still Canadians. What the hell difference would removal of thier citizenship make. It's cheap theater to be seen to be tough on terror when we have no intention of doing so.

None, DB. I don't equate being 'tough on terror' with disallowing citizenship to someone who it has been proven is a known terrorist.

The sleazy globalist Harpler obviously wanted to be seen to be tough on terror. The global power shift now underway and the outcome of same will determine who is terrorist and who is not. I don't see the threat of loosing citizenship preventing future acts of terrorism.Think of the Canadian political figures who involved this country in the various theaters of recent war with no legal backing. Many of the world most barbaric terrorists have no intention of personally carrying out the acts.

You are so occupied with this Harper and his successor: I have not yet been familiar with his name.
Neither Harper nor his successor bothers himself with your zealous debate.
Petros, I admire your very short comments; how can you manage this; although I may know the reason.

I don't know how people can go through life so worked up about politicians and anything that can possibly be construed as left or right, real or not. Going through life with all that anger must be a drag.

That happens every time a session of Parliament ends. The Country doesn't spin into a black void. You really need to do a better job of fear mongering. This has got to be the weakest I have seen yet.

Indeed.......

If Putin was saying the same thing it would be started in a few days, if the US was saying it then it is always just around the corner in the future. Jr. gets to be somewhere in between, perhaps that is what his father and Putin had in common is that there words were backed up very soon after being spoken. That would point to consistency in keeping your word is a stronger gatherer of friends than the opposite which is many words that never remain in effect.

Indeed.......
It would be better to have a (former rebel don't kid yourself) over for dinner on Valentine's Day rather than for x-mas and boxing day. The actual Syrians will go back to the ground they ran away from and pick up the pieces, literally.

I know I would rather say, ' Candy anyone?', rather than, 'Who wants to carve up the bird.' (start Viking drunken feast clip) when meeting a former ISIS slave to the West. I suggest a ward be set up to treat living soldiers who just lost their home and promised country via a stab in the back.

Since we never hold grudges it should be a piece of cake, right?

I sure hope dear Shiela isn't teaching her kids anything about politics considering the dumb a$$ doesn't know the difference between proroguing Parliament and not having the session start till after Christmas.

Lol...relax dude...not from the liberals (although their little 'we might not be able to get this sh!t done as soon as we promised' schtick is pretty obvious)...I almost took it as being about steve again...people freaking out that he could rise from the lurking dead...methinks Harper can remain in office for up to 364 days after the election. I ain't no parliamentary expert but he could do it no?

I agree that when parliament is held or not is not a big deal. Its not like he was going to act on any of those promises anyways so when it happens or doesn't is irrelevant. Should he choose to they can always do a bill and backdate it or use other less democratic means. But with a majority, it really doesn't matter if its an order of cabinet or not. Of course it wasn't a big deal to have parliament prorogued either.

Yeah, they definitely shouldn't be taken seriously! Ooops hold on, we are trying to get more people to vote! What for I can't imagine- they just turn 90 degrees after election day anyway. :)

Heard this on Power and Politics today and was a tad disconcerted. The refugee promise alone needs bucks - big bucks thrown at it and Justin said we'd have twenty-five thousand people here in Canada by January. He can not spend a cent of our money until he calls the House back.

...do you believe in magic.........

.........and, what the heck is Ralph Goodale doing telling us about this? I thought we were in a new era of openness and communication? This announcement should have come from the PM designate along with a good explanation.

Makes one wonder if the 'Crown Prince' is finding that he bit off more than he can chew! In the words of Canada's Anne Murray, "It takes time for all the answers to be dealt with properly. Every;body knows that it takes time"

I expect we will be hearing Trudeau parrot Goodall and other Liberals. He doesn't have the intelligence to speak for himself. And if he lets others do the talking he can always blame them when they say the wrong thing.

Maybe he just omits posting other people's thoughts from some goofy book?

Anyway, I think it is good strategy postponing opening parliament. It gives the Sunshine Superman and his pals time to think of what to do to put us off from remembering all the promises made pre-election.

Yeah, I think the handwriting is on the wall about the tenure under young Trudeau, we have to look forward to. But hey, the people have spoken? Isn't democracy great? :)

Well, after seeing that dear little Sheila is a "correspondent" for "The Rebel media" it really is no surprise that the air head doesn't know the difference between what Harper did and what has been suggested by the Liberals at this time. Especially since the Libs haven't even been sworn in yet and the Cons still hold the keys to the city. But, haters gotta hate.

I heard somewhere (CBC Radio One more than likely) the house was to sit on Nov 9 to get the urgent issues taken care of.

That doesn't surprise me, he wants 25,000 refugees here by Xmas, so he'd better get cracking.

Well, according to the bimbo from the rebel media, Trudeau just did. And he did it before he was sworn in as PM and before the House has even sat. Talk about power.
