that could be one of the problems, along with others. When we were kids, there were no ice packs to put
in any lunch, and some people didn't have refrigerators, only ice boxes, so great care, and everyday
shopping had to take place to make sure food was very fresh all the time.

no thermal lunch bags, just brown paper lunch bags, or a metal lunch box,
and there wasn't even anything plastic yet.

There were lots of little grocery stores in neighbourhoods, so one could drop by and pick up fresh food
for tomorrows lunch easily, the only big store in my town for food shopping was the first 'overwaitea'
ever, and it was about the size of a big drugstore, and way downtown, had to take the bus to shop there.

With many kids packing their own lunches today, because most parents work, and chores are varied, I would
be very careful about the food they are taking with them, and as the parent I would know exactly what
is in my frig, and just how fresh the food is, checking dates on packages, etc, and milk products.

At least now it is good to see that the schools have upgraded their supplies of food for the kids, so
its not all about popularity of products now, but 'nutrition' as well.

Kids can be so careless in the kitchen, leaving food on counters after snacks, etc., and no parents there
to observe, causing food to deteriorate, then it goes back into frig later, then back out for lunches,
poor habits for keeping food fresh, then if it sits around the school for 3 or 4 hours, more problems.

We used to get a lot of that canned meat spread in our sandwiches- it came in very small cans - probably 3-4 oz. enough to make about two good sandwiches. It wasn't too bad, sure beats baloney. I haven't checked lately to see if they even sell that stuff any more. Too much fancy stuff today and far too much packaging.

This really makes me happy all my little buggers are grown up and on their own some are
likely to be faced with this problem. Why so many allergies? Kids are protected from
everything these days. I know there are all kinds of allergies out there but really why in this
day and age are we having so many problems?
The food we eat today is processed and processed again until it is not fit for human consumption.
I took peanut butter, or meat sandwiches and never once got sick, I went in the fifties and sixties
as well. Today's food is full of chemicals and medications to get it to market we eat it and end up
sick. Nutrition is all but gone from the stuff, and we wonder why we have so many problems.
Processing, packaging and the health conditions in some plants would shock us all, but we don't
want to solve the problem we want to tinker with the system hoping to get it right.

yeah, I remember those little cans, yes it was pretty good, much better than the 'prem' that came later on,
which is so gross, it makes me gag to think about it, but if I had to, I would cover it with mustard
to kill the taste.

That meat spread was tasty on fresh bread, with a good layer of butter, or oleo margarine, coloured with the
little package of yellow stuff that came with it, it was just white, looked like lard.

You got that right, we ate bushels of that bloody Prem, I haven't eaten Prem once since I left home 50 years ago.

Funny off topic...

Years ago as a young lad I worked in construction. There was this guy who would go around and take one bite out of everyones sandwich. Yup, when he saw an unattended lunch box or lunch cooler he would take a bite of the sandwich and put it back. What could be more frustrating than opening your lunch pail and finding a solitary bite out of your sandwich. Nobody knew who it was but it was happening among all the trades and happening a lot.

So an electrician had a great idea. He put 3/4 inch nuts...

(these kind)

... into the middle of the sandwich... and waited.

One day a plumber had to leave the job with busted teeth and dripping blood from his mouth... a bloodied half sandwich on the floor. Of course it was hard to get off the job without everyone seeing some guy yelping in pain bleeding from his mouth and the cheers of all the workers. In essence the mystery was solved and the plumber was laid off.

I just dropped 17,000 bucks on tutition texts rent and spending moolah on my kid yesterday to get a degree in nutrition. In another two years and 70K later she'll learn from somebody else the samthing I told her years ago. If you want to stay warm, eat butter, if you want to be sharper than average eat fish and flax, if you want to do a hard days work eat beef or pork. Don't drink milk. You're not trying to put on 450kg in 6 months and sugar will kill you.

She makes awesome sandwiches.,

I wish you'd talked to me before dumping 17 grand on nutrition. Here's the site for absolutely free.
