This is the story that Sparrow was speaking of last night in the other thread....

A former Hasidic Orthodox Jew is has served notice of an intention to sue the provincial government in Quebec saying it failed to enforce education requirements leaving him virtually illiterate and unemployable.

British-born Yonanan Lowen, now 36, came to Canada at age 10 where attended two still-operating illegal haredi Tosh yeshivas north of Montreal and spoke only in Yiddish.

He intends to sue the government for over $1 million dollars saying he was never taught to read or write English or French or the public school curriculum as the law requires.

He says he only began to learn his “A-B-C’s” at age 29. Lowen left the orthodox community in 2010, moving from the suburbs of Montreal into the city but says his lack of education has left him with virtually no potential for a real future in society.
He said the Quebec government is to blame for letting that happen, and that other children in the orthodos jewish community are in the same situation.

He notes his lack of employability is also affecting his family of several children after an arranged marriage at age 18.
Although he now teaches a few hours each week at a synagogue, Lowen says he suffers from depression and obsessive compulsive disorder.

There could be further legal action if others come forward, according to Julien Pelletier, the executive director of the legal clinic Juripop
He noted the Lowen’s legal notice to the education ministry, youth protection, the school boards involved and the Quebec provincial ministry could become a class-action suit if others come forward.

Quebec’s education minister would not comment saying the issue could end up in the courts.

Orthodox Jew sues Quebec government for a lack of education

oh, oh, what to do?

you'd think at some point after 17 buddy would have got a clue and taken a few steps toward catching up

apparently it's just easier to sue

So it's just that easy to determine the crowns position, the man had an existing precondition. If he was an idiot at 17 it is likely a case of bad DNA or an unfortunate frightening accident with a toaster.

well something was fried for sure

if this plays out any other way, we deserve to have to pay him

someone must think there is a chance though because he certainly won't be capable of representing himself

If the school failed to educate him to acceptable standards and the government did nothing, the government should be held accountable. Whether the guy is an idiot or not is completely irrelevant

Well how can we be sure that your sympathies lie entirely with the subject in question, in that you may hope his success leads to future successful compensation for a state of mind you regularly exhibit yourself.

Sympathy has nothing to do with it. If you were half as intelligent as you thought you were you know that

So the government forced him to go to hared tosh geshivas ? Where he was forced to speak Yiddish ? And when did the Govt. of Quebec get into the arranged marriage business ? C'mon shake yer ****in' head !

Don't be a simpleton. Even if you're homeschooled there are standard. If the government didn't enforce the standards they are liable. This may come as a shock to you but children generally don't decide where they're going to go to school

no but Cannuck, the parents do

so where do you draw the line and how does the government measure learning within the classroom other than through testing...if they sent the tests like they do to regular schools and the tests were returned , they are good to go

PLUS measurement is relative...my girlfriend home schooled two kids...the older girl has an IQ off the charts, her son is autistic...the measurement varies the parent or school determines success

Good grief, the guy is 36 years old. How long are we expected to support people who don' t support themselves. Were we responsible to get these people out of bed and take them to the correct Jewish institutions so they can get special education. Now he wants to sue the country for his bad decisions.

Um....it wasn't his decision...it was his parents. The education system failed him (if his story is true).

That's the problem with home schooling if the education system is not conducting the tests. This guy is claiming he didn't even know his ABCs. If this is true and due to a failure to teach it by the school and the provincial education system allowed the school to operate, they should be held accountable.

I don't think anybody would suggest the school or province be held accountable for not teaching somebody unteachable. By all accounts, this guys was able to learn his ABCs but was not taught them. Like most of these stories though, the facts will come out in court

Did you bother to read the article? It says he went to an illegal school. That means the Quebec government had no control over it. He should be suing his parents for forcing him into illegal activities at the age of 10.
