I'm glad that senior has taken on all the liability for the stairs if anyone gets injured or slips or falls on them.

As the video explains the stairs were requested to prevent slips and falls that were occurring but rather than wait for dingbat bureaucrats to get off their fat behinds this senior got the job done. Complaints turned to praise from those that use the park, everyone is happy except the bureaucrats that were made to look like the bloody fools that they are.
It appears to me the stairs are much safer than the previous rough path, good on this gentleman.

But my point is that he is now responsible for anyone injured using the stairs.

It's on city property. How is he any more responsible for injuries than anyone who breaks a nail attending to the community garden? Use at OWN risk....

Lawyers are too well fed

Who built the slope? City's blocked it off. City's been embarrassed (and he gets FULL credit for that) City might even make it Code ... still for one-one hundredth the price they wanted to pay a unionized friend. Sure if someone slipped, some buzzard ... er ... lawyer will want to capitalize on it. Where was the flock when people actually slipped on the City's slope?

I think peaceful harmony begins with a lawyer in the cross hairs anyhow....

This is funny actually. The City is just pissed off they couldn't hand the $65,000 contract to one of their good buddies. I mean seriously what a bargain, $65,000 to build a set of $500 stairs. That's what it cost the old guy.

In 15 years he can build himself a ramp to get to the gardens.

unlike you he got his point across
which you must have missed

However, Mayor John Tory says they will be rebuilt.

"The original cost estimate for the City of Toronto to build stairs in Tom Riley Park was absolutely ridiculous and out of whack with reality," Tory said in a statement on Friday.

"I want to thank Mr. Astl for taking a stand on this issue. His homemade steps have sent a message that I know city staff have heard loud and clear. The city always needs to be looking for simple, cost-effective solutions to problems no matter how big or small they are.

"Work on the new steps starts today and will be done in a matter of days.

I'm not a lawyer, but I've no doubt that the city legal staff is wondering if they should be ripped out, added to or just ignored and suck up the bad press.

Some Toronto lawyer will comment on any liability the city might have should someone slip and fall. Since this has become a news event, I am sure this story will have legs.

Bureaucracy often ruins the space that common sense once occupied.
