Oklahoma Will Charge Customers Who Install Their Own Solar Panels

Oklahoma residents who produce their own energy through solar panels or small wind turbines on their property will now be charged an additional fee, the result of a new bill passed by the state legislature and expected to be signed into law by Gov. Mary Fallin (R).

I saw this last night and I'm still just... shaking my head at this.

Surprised they're not making it illegal to have solar or wind power. Guess this is the next best thing.

Title of OP is, not surprisingly, incorrect. The law does not charge extra for installing your own solar panels.

They will be charged a monthly fee for installing solar panels and wind turbines. I didn't write the title of the OP. Read the article.

Hey, WalMart.. just read the article, you're on the wrong side...
The article says people will be charged extra if they sell their excess power back to the grid, not if they install solar panels. Read the article.

I read the article at close to the bottom..

"Oklahoma “could be the first complete defeat for solar advocates in their fight against utility efforts to recover costs lost to DG [distributed generation] use,”

From the article...

"The measure creates a new class of customers: those who install distributed power generation systems like solar panels or small wind turbines on their property and sell the excess energy back to the grid."

...just as Walter said.

So its a tax on energy producers. Is the same tax in place for coal plants and nuclear plants currently providing power to the grid? If so, it is completely fair. If not, it is an attempt to unbalance the playing field.

Why wouldn't they have to pay to use the grid they don't own or pay to maintain?

The users pay for all operating cost, including all the salaries of the Utilities. Putting power back in should make those uses 'business owners' and with that all the expense deductions that the utility companies claim every year at tax time. The fees would come under operatint expense and the 'deductions for providing power' would be an 'income'. That power they buy is also sold to another customer so how much money is 'lost' in reality?

If you are generating any income... the state and or federal government is always going to want their cut.

In Massachusetts some towns require you to get a permit for a yard sale. They want their cut.
